I have a 1980 4X4 with the L-43 side shift shifter. There is a bracket near the top that holds the shifter with two bolts in it. The bolts have shoulders on them and the bracket has enlarged holes where it looks like there should be some type of bushing. Those bushings are gone and there is a lot of slop in the bracket. Does anyone know where I can purchase the bushings? Also, how do you remove the shifter from the transmission?

Well, since no one responded to my post, I found my own answer. There are 4 rubber bushings and 4 flat washers that go on the shifter support that is bolted to the side of the transmission. All the parts are still available from Toyota at a reasonable cost. My local dealer got the parts overnight from the Toyota parts warehouse w/o costing me any freight.

Just in case anyone else has this issue, here are the Toyota part numbers:
#33615-20012 Bushing 4 required
#33555-20010 Boot this goes on the horizontal shaft that goes into the trans 1 req.
#33555-30030 Boot that goes on top of the support bracket 1 req.
#33555-30020 Boot that goes on the bottom of the support bracket 1 req.

Tech Tip for anyone making this same repair:
If you put the bushing halves and washers on the bracket then take a thin piece of thread or fishing line and tie the parts together to the bracket, it is a lot easier to get the bolts through without pushing the bushings out and having to pick them up from underneath the vehicle multiple times.
Don't ask me how I know this. LOL

That is some great information. I am not as familiar with the older transmissions but I know one of the first gens transmissions I am almost positive it looks like it came out of a Model T. lol

Thanks for that info. I have a sloppy shifter as well. I have read that this same transmission we have is not very solid to begin with but you just work with what you have and wait till you get the chance to upgrade.

I use my truck mainly for hunting ( as you can tell from the camo paint job ) not any heavy wheeling and I have not had any trouble with the trans. It mostly just gets me to the woods and hopefully me and a dead deer back out of the woods. With the 31X10.50's Firestone Destination M/T's on it, I have never gotten it stuck.
If you take the shifter boot out of the floor and find a gap between the shifter support and the side of the trans, then you will need to replace the bushings. Mine were completely gone. It made a world of difference putting the bushings in. Shifts like new money now.
