1979 Pickup 20R to '87 22RE
First off, mods feel free to move this to the Engine Swap area, I just figured that the most response would come from the 1st gen area and those who are/were rockin a 20R.
I have a 1979 Toyota Pickup Longbed 4x4, 20R/L43 combo, working on putting it back together. So today I got an awesome deal at the scrap yard on a 22RE, W56 and t-case courtesy of a 87 4Runner.. My question is what all do I need to swap this FI 22RE into a carbed 20R truck. I have most if not all of the harness off the motor, and I have 3 computers for it.
Some major points of interest to me:
- Fuel pump, what do I need to swap in to feed this thing?
- Fuses and power to computer...I don't even know where to start. Do I need the fuse box(es)?
- Gauges, will the 79 cluster work? I do have 3 1st gen 4Runner clusters if need be.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

sweet deal!!! that is what I need to find..
this link from pirate: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...ferrerid=89727 is about converting a 22rto 22re not just installing one but I think some of the info would still apply as far as stuff like needing an EFI fuel tank. It should also have some info about the wiring. I think the pump is mounted in the tank instead of on the block been 20 years since i had a 22RE

That's a good write up, thanks for the link just browsed through it for now, but it seems I do need the whole harness to start with. Along with the fuse boxes...
Looks like I'll be hitting the junkyard later this week after I read a bit further through that link.

Yeah i'm doing a 94 22RE into a 1982 shortbed this summer, I got the donor truck for $500 and have sold $350 worth of cosmetics and body parts. $150 for an engine tranny and all i need for a swap (except a few steering things) is a killer deal in my book.

i spent $250 on the motor, trans, case, a new, clean! hardtop for my 4runner, and a bunch of small odds and ends, not to bad in my book.
I can't wait to get started

yeah you'll need the fuel tank the pump and new lines, i dont know if the cross member is useable, i was told that maybe if u flip it around it works but i dont know. You can get a budbuilt xmember and attatch it with u-bolts if the stock cant be used. the transmission is longer too so you'll need to get the rear shaft shrotened and the front longer. all i know so far, trying to decide what im doing for a motor still.

Also I can't see any reason the original cluster wouldn't work less the speedometer cable not connecting (unlikely). You will just have to spend some quality time with a wiring diagram to get the pinouts right.

Figured it should work, none of my in cab lights work, nor most of the gauges now as it is (hackjob of previous owners and 2 cabs later..) so I definitely have to sit down with both harnesses and diagrams and have at it

Well after searching Pirate for a few hours, I saw a link that a 2nd gen 2WD pickup EFI tank will bolt in. Can anyone verify this?
Also read I could use the stock carb tank, and use an inline fuel pump, BUT there are no baffles in the carb tank and this will only come into effect when I'm low on fuel. Here's a snippin from Pirate.
What exactly is a surge tank?

I've heard also that a carb'd tank (unbaffled) won't like the high pressure of an EFI pump at low fuel levels. The return creates too much air. The solution is a surge tank.

More pirate searching lead me to this:
so im gunna snag a few fuel pump assemblies next time im at the junkyard and see how they turn out in my 79 tank
Those are 79 pu gas tanks, they came with an elect fuel pump and the efi pump assy unit goes right in its place.
on a few of the first gens i have seen, mine included, i didnt have to swap the tank. the fule pump and sender bolt in.
for some reason the early tanks have a big hole and a little one
the 2nd gen carb tanks have the one small hole weird.
