Yota ... Required Tool List

Being fairly new to My Runner how about the more experienced members making up a list of tools that would be highly recommended for newer Toyota owners? You know the specialty stuff that you need for that one big nut or whatever. Thanks

10 mm socket with spares
10 mm wrench with spares
ratchet/extensions

With those 3 items, you can take apart most of your vehicle.

I think that a 54mm socket is what you need to remove the front spindle nut to repack bearings.

54 mm!! That's a big socket...
Seems like I've needed a 12mm for a lot of stuff as well.

When I put my K&N in, I think all that I really used was the 10mm and 12mm sockets and wrenches...

You might as well just get a set of the wrenches... I think the oil drain plug was a 14 or 15mm

I'm down with all the basics. I was more curious about special tools like the 54mm socket.

If your truck is anything like my 89 you will need a sawzall, chized, and hammer. Those were my weapons of choice when replacing the rusted out front shocks on my 89

Other than the 54mm hub socket and factory service manuals I can't think of any speciality tools that you wouldn't use on other vehicles. I have bought stuff as a result of reparing stuff on my truck (seal/bearing driver, impact wrench, nice floor jack, etc.).

aren't the drain plugs for the tranny & diffs 24mm? I know I drove all over town trying to track one down (sears had it of course) I had to get bigger hex wrenches for the front diff too, 12mm? Your 2nd gen might be different than mine tho.

The diff (rear) on 3rd gens is either 14 or 24mm...I too had to drive all over town to find one. When I did find one, it was 1/2 drive, adn I only have 3/8 ratchets, so i had to buy a $15 breaker bar too (for $20, I couldve gotten a 36" one, instead of the 8" I got, but I onbly had a total of $20 with me)

34mm axle nut socket, torx bits, torque wrench, breaker bar (homemade or otherwise), ratcheting wrenches (awesome!), deep metric sockets.

you'll need (2) 19mm wrenches if you plan on changing you CVs. so 8, 10, 12, 14 15 17 19 will cover just about everything.

i don't use a 10mm for a lot of stuff on my toy at all. most seems to be 12 or 14 mm, with the odd 13, 15, 18, and 19 tossed in.

hub socket = 54mm, you can buy the cheesy sheet metal snap on one like me or go to sears and pay $22 or so for a beefy 2 1/8" one(same size)

Hammer, 10mm and 12mm sockets. My buddy has an 84 PU and the Diff bolts are indeed 24mm.
