Toyota has reported record-breaking sales for the Tacoma, and continues to lead the pack among competitors

Sales of the 2019 Toyota Tacoma are on fire. The midsize truck sales’ were up 6.8 percent compared to last May, according to Toyota’s recent sales report.  The Tacoma also had its best ever May in sales. But that’s not all, the truck marked its 19th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. As the midsize truck wars heat up, this is an impressive feat and shows the strength of Tacoma and its proven staying power.

May 2019 Tacoma sales totaled 22,832, and 101,390 year-to-date. The Tacoma beat out heavy hitters in the segment; including Chevy Colorado, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline and Jeep Gladiator.

The truck is a standout with consumers because it has an excellent reputation for long-term quality and reliability. In fact, the Tacoma carries with it a legacy of almost lasting forever. The running joke within truck circles it that you just cannot kill a Tacoma.

According to iSeeCars Toyota’s mid-size pickup truck is a perennial favorite among buyers because it is one of the vehicles most-likely to reach up 200,000 miles. It’s considered above average as a vehicle that is likely to go over 300,000 miles.

Competition Heats Up

Of course, while all of this is good news, the automaker must always be aware of what its competitors are offering. The new Ford Ranger comes with a potent 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that beats other gas-powered pickups in its class with a torque rating of 310 lb.-ft. And with all that muscle, the Ranger boasts the most fuel-efficient gas-powered midsize pickup in America.

The new Jeep Gladiator is another competitor lurking in the wings. Gladiator has the Jeep DNA and brings best-in-class available 7,650-pound towing capacity and best-in-class available 1,600-pound payload.

2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD off-road

Can the Toyota Tacoma keep it’s number one mid-size truck status? Some say it won’t last forever as the Tacoma is now facing sharper competition from Ford and Jeep. But if we look at current sales and customer loyalty as predictors of future sales, we think it’s safe to say that Toyota has found a strong place in the market. Plus, as we reported, the 2020 Tacoma has already earned praise for its updates and option choices. We’re pretty confident that Toyota can enjoy their spot for awhile.
