blew a head gasket--'85 p/u 22re....tore it apart and rod bearings were at minimum so replaced those and rings...put it back together and have a knocking sound only at cruising or no load. tore it apart again....measured and have bearing oil clearances of .0030 book says .0012 to .0028. When I put in the new standard bearings I DID NOT LOOK at the bearings I pitched away. I think now they were over sized.
When I have the head off and push down on the pistons they all drop down that .0030 distance. Have new pins and bushings..using same standard pistons.....valves set right/timing chain fine (new metal driver side chain guide). Valve cover not hitting.....
question: will over sized bearings make up for this slack and if so what size?

Put in new exhaust valves (pitted)....
About to go under and plasti-gauge rod bearings again....
