My new computer setup
I'm pretty stoked! Here's what's coming in the mail this week!!
Thanks NEWEGG!!!!
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+(65W) Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2
COOLMAX CR-550B ATX 550W "140mm Fan" Power Supply - Retail
GIGABYTE GA-M55SLI-S4 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD
mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) with EPP Profile Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996533
Rosewill R5604-BK 0.8mm SECC Screw-less Dual 120mm Fans ATX
Total was $705! I was originally going to go with a 65nm processor, but decided to save some dough and get an energy efficient 65W 90nm. Plus, AMD has announced that they will shortly have 45nm processors running at 35W!! Since this is an AM2 board, I'll probably upgrade the processor when the EE chips come out! I'm salvaging my optical drives, video card, and memory card reader... Later I'll run a couple gpus in SLi, but it's not really necessary right now, as I don't do much gaming on the pc. I've always been an AMD and Nvidia fan... too bad AMD bought ATI and not Nvidia... I'm a little skeptical since Nvidia probably feels betrayed by the buy out. I just hope I can get decent driver support for 64 bit os's...
Thanks NEWEGG!!!!

Looks like a decent setup. What made you go for the AMD though? Right now, Intel is ahead of things and their processors are 65W as well?
Just wondering
My setup is gonna be something like this (granted, it'll be a little more expensive):
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe (2.4ghz, overclocked to ~3.5 ish) = $315
eVGA nVidia 680i motherboard = $250
corsair or OCZ PC6400 or PC8500 memory = $250
a real good power supply to power it = $180
misc. (i will re-use my old HDD's for now) = $400 (includes some video card)
So that's in the ball park of $1500.
But, with the experience I have, I will be able to overclock safely and be able to use it for a very long time (3-5 years or more). I did the same with my current computer and mine is still not short of steam (about 4-5 years old), I just wanna play around with new technology.

I've been running the AMD 3800+ 64X2 for about a year now. By far the most stable computer I have had. I ordered all my stuff from Newegg too.
Newegg is pretty much the only place I use when ordering computer parts.

The reason I've gone with AMD is pretty much because my first modern computer was an AMD 333mHz K5... Intel DOES have their act together this round, but the P4 put an even worse taste in my mouth. I lived in an Intel facility town and heard from some as to how that particular sector was run. Anyhow, I'm actually going with this so I can upgrade to a 45nm 35W processor in the near future. The 3800+ seemed very competent and the fact that the 65W power consumption is a plus. Plus, I got the sweet ram and processor for 300 bucks. Definitely the most expensive thing on my build list, yet I didn't want to skimp on the processor OR the ram... I'll actually probably salvage some things from my current comp for a carPC, Sean!! Trust me... it's something I've been thinking about for a long time! heh heh Plus, that link you gave me a while back helped out a lot with the cases and monitors and whatnot!! Mark, I plan on overclocking mine, but I'm gonna give the processor a little time. I've seen reports of people OC'ing this particular processor to 2.9 ~ 3.1gHz with the right cooling. Imagine the possibilities with a liquid nitrogen copper coil tubed, with the mobo in inert liquid, and a 45nm processor. I've seen people OC those insane amounts. Oh, it all comes down to cost also... heheheh gotta save as many benjis as possible w/o sacrificing system stability! hahahah

I see...I am an AMD guy myself currently (watercooled XP 2500+ @ 2.5 ghz), but I see a lot of good things in Intel I am gonna try. The whole nitro thing caught my eye a while back, but it's crazy expensive and I you won't be running to crazy top speeds anyway and there's always the danger of condensation.
Definately let us know how you progress though!

I just built a new pc, like u guys and have a few thoughts.
One is
Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 900(PC2 7200)
(as it's listed on newegg) I got it for $263.
It's only a little bit more expensive but man is it fast. I just went with a e6600, antec 900 case, and artic cooling freezer 7, asus p5w deluxe, and that ram.
I'm currently stable at 3.2ghz, I'm sure it can go further I just don't have the patience to do it. I bet I could get it to 3.6 or so with this setup. It's not silent at full speed but neither is it loud, and no dealing with the water. These chips seem to be really understated they can do a lot. Water cooled, man I bet you can push it up near 4.2 that would be one screaming fast machine. If you are going up there though you better opt for the best ram u can but it will be worth it.
Oh and throw in a Dell 24'' and you've got a real nice setup.

That sounds like a sweet setup. I really had to find deals though as I had to stay as economical as possible, with the possibility of a long upgrade future as I hate totally rebuilding computers ever few months. I've had my 1.1gHz since early '02, with PC133 SDRAM, and it still runs smoother than a lot of peoples new computers, but with the limited capability of my motherboard I just found it time to upgrade. The motherboard I got supports DDR2800 with no hitches, so for cause of stability, I just went with what's safe, heh heh.
