Garmin.
If you're fortunate to have ArcView (3.x or 9.x) you can download an extension to import points/tracks/routes directly as a layer. No other software required. I use the USGS 7.5' topos as a general background. You can scan other maps (trail maps) as jpg's and georeference them for more detail. Same thing with aerial photos. You can then turn the indidivdual layers on and off. Unfortunately, you can't upload the maps to a Garmin, but if you can get a Trimble GeoExplorer XH, you're set.
If you live/ wheel in AZ, check out aria.arizona.edu for free topos and aerials.
If you take photos along the way you hyperlink them to the corresponding point. You then have more up-to-date trail info than any trail guide.

I had a Magellan eXplorist 200, or somethin' close, till I backed over it a few months back. I didn't ever even need it but once, and I brought it along on my all my endurance reconoitre runs. I couldn't get lost if I had to, aside from the instance where that damn thing came in very handy, indeed. Long story short, sun went down as I circled a high mountain lake lookin' for that familiar road out, that looked like every road I passed. Well with very little gas to get home, I suddenly remembered, I turned that gps on earlier AND IT KNOWS THE WAY HOME!!! HURRAY!!!!
