Garmin or Lowrance GPS?

I am looking at two GPS right now... both are from Cabela's and both are around $100... here they are:

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...350&hasJS=true

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...350&hasJS=true

Are these any good at all? Will they show trails and roads/interstate? Anyone have one of these and if you do... do you like it? Which one out of those two would you take?

Actually this Cobra also...

Thanks

I would try to look for one that you can upload maps to. (I don't think any of those can upload) I have an ETREX Legend and a magellan color. The "base" map on both are basic highway maps, and major city streets. I uploaded the topo maps (have to buy the map program also...about $100 and it is usually years out of date). Gave more detail, contour, and forest service roads, and trails.

Check out the prices at VANNS.COM. I have ordered several things from them and they are very reliable and can save you some money. You pay no tax and sometimes shipping is free. Got my Magellan Color here a while back. The Magellan Color and Gold will do turn by turn directions or you can load topos on it. The color is great but uses alot of battery when hiking because it has to stay backlit. The Gold is just as good without the color. Magellan also has a new series that looks pretty promising but I think the displays are smaller. My Magellan is also waterproof and actually floats.

I would not buy one without mapping capability and the ability to add memory and load maps. Otherwise it is a waste. You can get the original magellan meridian for about $99 that will map or the Magellan Explorist 200 for $139. The Garmin you listed will not. There are much better choices out there for the money. You might even look on ebay; I sold my Magellan Meridian on E-bay when I upgraded...alot of people upgrade periodically. I would suggest a Garmin or a Magellan as they seem to be the leading brands. I have been using GPS's for years and I have never heard of Lowrance.

Good luck.

I bought my magellan color on ebay (300 IIRC). Also bought the topo program there. If I am hiking and keep the GPS on, it will use 2 sets of batteries a day. My Garmin legend only used 1 set a day.

I have used the lithiums in mine and rechargable energizers and last alot longer (but the lithiums are more expensive). Is your Garmin color? (just curious since it uses less battery) My brothers Magellan Gold (not color) does all of the same things my Color does but lasts longer because it does not have to be backlit. I definitely like the color better in the car but you are right it will eat regular batteries if you leave it on. One thing I do is leave it on but turn the back light off unless I am looking at it.

Have you used the direct route software? It works pretty well.
