Speaker size and location...HELP...
Hello,
I am replacing my sons stereo in his 4 Runner and need a little help. Can someone please tell me what the speaker sizes are for the front and rear? He has a 95 SR5 4-Door 4x4. I figure the rear are 5 1/4" but cannot figure the front. Maybe 4x6?? The front look like 3-ways. Also, there are two grills slits just above the rear window. Are these for tweeters??
Thanks for the help,
DJ

nothing the doors. period.
90-95s had speakers in the front dash, 4" suckers point down to your ankles. in the rear are 6.5" in a plate configuration, IIRC.
FWIW, just get good 6.5" components or coaxes and make a wood baffle and stick them in the doors.
and forget the rear speakers...
you will be happy that way...

not exactly sure on the rear speakers, but they will fit anything you want ot jam in there on an adapter plate. The fronts will accept a 4" though.
Eventually i got pissed with the 4" sound and built my own kicks

still the best bet is to make baffles to mount them donw low and as forward in the doors.
or you can get the Q-FORMS kickpanels...

the point is to point the tweeters at a point between the front passengers. almost to the where the dome light is (those without a sunroof).
remember, we are dealing with 2 channel stereo.
and if you want to take it further, say compete in car stereo contests, the best soundings cars are those when you play a certain soundtrack, the voice seem to come from the hood ornament.
when you place the speakers furthest away from listener (such as the kickpanel pods made by Q FORM), you minimize the difference between the left and right speakers.
plus, you want to aim the speaker up high.
that's why i said the OEM speaker locations on the 90-95 4runners are the worse places ever.
even with my setup of mb quart 218s in each of the front doors, without using some sort of electrical tricks, i can never make my vehicle sound like the voice is coming from the hood ornament.
the best i can do (using IASCA 2000 competition CD with the jennifer warnes track) is her voice is around front and center, but the furthest i can get her is around the winshield wipers.
(fortunately for me, IASCA changed their rules about only having one judge sit in the car listening. i can use a digital delay sound processor to delay the audio signals coming from the left speakers to match that of the right speakers.)
things to consider:
* tweeters are VERY directional. so even at the bottom, by pointing them up, you can make them sound very well.
* forget rear speakers. IMO, in the mobile environment, 2 channel stereo is still king. rear speakers will just drag the image to the rear. if you CAN, even stuff the subwoofer in front of you...
