Is this a good spot to mount speakers in the 1st gen runner?

I own an 88 4runner. I would like to take the top off when im wheelin but i dont want my speakers to get trashed with spray form water/mud. I was thinking speakerbar, but they would get wet. So my next idea...Right next to the backseat there is a platics tray. Those of you with first gens know what i mean. Could iput a speaker in that spot? And how big woudl fit in there? I would probably make a wooden case for the speaker and put that in the spot. Anyhelp woudl be great

Hi,

I actually sort of gave up on doing rear speakers. My 4Runner is so clean stock, that I didn't want to start cutting those rear plastic storage panels to shove some exterior mounted black speakers (I have brown panels).

Here's what I did to get some sort of sound back there. I bought this really inexpensive ($20) 4 speaker box from AutoZone. It is basically a left woofer/tweeter combination and a right woofer/tweeter combination. I have this box facing the back and it's normally unplugged. But, when we go and hang out somewhere, I have extra speaker wire hidden in the panels so I can connect the box and put it on the tailgate like a boom box.

Another idea I was playing with was mounting some marine speakers behind the panels where those holes are behind the rear seat bench. Again, this won't produce much sound for the rear passengers, especially with a sub. I currently have 4" Infinity references in the front with a 10" MTX Sealed box sub in the back. My friends in the back say they can hear the vocals and highs fine, so I botched the whole true rear speaker idea. Plus, the sub sort of drowns out a lot back there anyway

My '85 doesn't have the retractable belts and that pocketed panel for the rear passengers, just a solid plastic panel. I couldn't help you there except for saying just cut out and mount some plastic spacer reinforcements, sandwiching the panel between the speaker and the spacer.

Peace,

Justin

I have put junk 6x9's in a bucket and played them with a junk amp. Nothing happened. You can't hear them well at all, but you do see the water shake with the beat.
