Dropped off my blown amp today at the stereo shop.
If it ends up costing over $80 to fix it, I will not.

The shop owner wants to sell me an Alpine MPR F240.

Even though it is a 4 channel amp like the blown one, it puts out double the power.
Around 100 watts RMS x 2 channels into 4 ohms.
I do not know about the quality of the amp though, but I can pick it up for about 2 bills.

I still like that Memphis unit.
Ahhhhhhhh, so many choices.
If my RF can be repaired cheaply, I will run it for awhile, then upgrade next year to a cleaner one.

Those back things are the mosfets?
It probably did not help matters when I put in a 50 amp fuse to test it after the 30 amp one blew.

If I did have a 30 amp one on hand, I'm sure it would have just blown too, so something was causing it to blow the fuse.

I won't hear back until next week, as the owner of the shop won't see the repair dude until Thursday evening.

One thing is for sure, it is very quiet driving to and fro
I am so use to having either the radio on or a CD playing.

No that probably didnt help, your right. If it blew just playing too hard like you had it bridged in mono or something, slapping a 50amp fuse in would have been appropriate (depending on manufacturers specs of course)

Nobody said getting an education was cheap or without sacrifice

Yeah, only playing at half volume or less.
And it was off for close to 30 minutes before I slapped in the bigger fuse.

Yeah...
mosfet

Those are the critters.
One had one of the 3 wires burned off.
Probably some heavy duty major arching going on in there.

Maybe I'll get lucky and it will not cost a fortune to fix it.

Rockford tech wrote back to me today, and said they'd love to sell me a new P4004 amp.
Double the power they say of my 200a4.

I have heard the quality of the new amps has gone way down hill since the old series like I have were discontinued.

A lot of the local shops that use to carry RF back when I built my system a few years back got out of carrying them.

The local shop by me told me they would love to be a dealer for Memphis and have looked into it, but they are not sure how to budget it into the amplifier lineup they carry now which is:
Boss
JBL
Alpine
Soundtream

Yes you are right the second amp is a class D amplifier,
i have used that exct same amp to run 2 sqaure L7 8's and hit 145.6 db in a chevy sprint, this is a wicked amp, a little pricey compared to others but it is definatley top quaility, its got a different type of connections and wores inside so it stays cool and draws less current,
the first is still a wicked amp but it will draw a little more power off your battery with a little more distortion but again a wicked amp for the price,
go for the class D (MC150) definately my choice

You should do what I did awhile back. Buy the new model of your amp, swap the boards, then return the new amp with the old board. Works great!

I dunno if it would work...they do make board changes with each generation usually....

As far as SQ is concerned the biggest issue is not with the amp, but rather your speakers. (within reason of course - stay with well known and mainstream amps)

BTW - Corey I know you said you dont want to pay $$$ for a world class amp, but periodically you'll run into a competitor that's unloading his stuff for really cheap, and that's where you can grab a world class amp for cheap. So keep you eyes peeled on ebay, termpro, carsound, sounddomain, caraudio, caraudioforum's classifieds.

I highly recommend Zapco, it's my personal opinion they produce some of the best amps on earth.

Store called me Friday, and the quote was $140 to fix the amp, as it blew a main board.
Not worth it to me, as I have a new plan.

I really like the sheer power of my RF 500a2 amp I have for the sub.
These old school RF amps can still be found, and I can get one for under $100 used.

Way more power than the one that blew, I will just have to turn down the gains some so I do not blow the Refers in my front doors.

Going without tunes now for a few weeks is not really that bad.
I do notice the smell of exhausts more though.
Funny how before the tunes blocked some of that out.
