Pipe Vs. Tubing
I plan on building rock sliders and Bumpers for my truck. Im wondering what the differences between pipe and tubing are? I know pipe is weaker, but is it strong enough for sliders and grill hoops and such?

I would use either for anything but a rollcage (or rollbar). Pipe is usually cheaper and often easier to come by. I have, however seen a couple cages built out of pipe with great results. I also haven't seen picture of video proof of bad results. If you wanna be cool, use tubing. If you wanna be orininal, practical, and get a bunch of people mad at you for using the wrong material, use pipe. ok im done now...

if you are throwing together a set of sliders for your truck using a $99 harbor freight bender, sc 40 pipe is perfectly fine. I have been running a set of cheapo bent sch 40 sliders for years and they have held up great. with pipe, you get a heavier wall thickness for your buck which in a slider application is good.

Everyone I know who uses HREW (tubing and much stronger than pipe) for their sliders has either dented them or had to do the "jump on the slider to open the door dance" I would use DOM tubing for sliders, they probably see more abuse than any other piece of BODY armor. All my tubing is DOM and I have had the sliders on my 5300lb 4runner for 4+ years and they havent even budged.

If you're interested; the link below is some specs on tubing type and wall thickness in Race Cars. I am building my truck to be able to serioulsy stand up to anything so I wanted to abide by the strictest of standards. This page helped me quite a bit in making my desicion of Pipe or Tubing.
I will add that my sliders saved both me and my Runners body in a sideways freeway accident.

Pipe is for houses! Use HREW or DOM for sliders and bumpers. Definetly use DOM for all cages. HREW cages tend to be one time use, while DOM, or even better with Chromoly, will stand up to abuse far better. PROTECT YOUR HEAD!!!

"Structural pipe" is usually tubing that was rejected for not meeting the tubing spec. There is a defect in it somewhere - and you don't know where that is. Is it OK for sliders and bumpers? Sure. Roll cage? Absolutely not.
