'90 4runner SAS Project

Alright so we are starting my SAS in my 1990 4runner. I plan on ducmenting this as much as possible.

I am going with 4.56 gears and aussie lockers front and rear. Using Rancho lift springs in the front with bilstein shocks all around.
Haven't decided if I am going to 4-link the rear yet or save some money and go with a leaf setup until summer time or so.

Last weekend we cut off all the IFS and will continue to "clean up" under there until its nice to look at.

Custom bumpers, trimmed fenders and rock sliders are also some things that will be done. At the same time I'll be getting a rebuild on my 22re and possibly a cam, headers, 2.5 exhaust all the way and some other small mods to spin my 36" MTR's.

I blew a head gasket a short while ago, so I am just going to get a complete rebuild done to make everything nice and new again.
I will also need to replace my timing chain/cover.

As I posted I will probably try and increase the stock power a little... cam, header, exhaust, already have a K&N cold air intake.

I'm not much of a wrencher, I am mostly watching as my brother from www.bigcountrycustoms.com does all the work. Its cool to see though and I cant wait to get it done! should be pretty killer for my first truck.

Might go to the shop tonight, will post any progress

nice man, do you still have the front sway bar setup from the ifs? cause I broke the little rod that connects the sway bar to the lower a-arm...

ditch the swaybar completely, you really dont need it.

so with a 22re, 36' tires, and only 4.56 gears. seems like you need a little more gear to turn those big tires. IMO

Most 22re trucks (lighter) with 35's run 5.29's. I've got 4.56's with a v6 and 31's.
Should be sweet when it's done.

he will be doing alot of miles on the hwy, thats why we went with those gears were gonna do 488 but wasent able to get them at the time, should have waited though, have had them for a long time now project got put on hold..there actually 35" mtrs going on it..im sure shortly after the sas we will be installing a dual t-case set up..

5.29's are a pretty tried and true method for pushing 35's with a 22re. The truck I've ridden in with that setup still seemed under powered.

That will help him in 4 low but not daily driving.

with 29" tires they still seem under powered!!!it will be good i have been through all the gear sets and for what he wants to do all around it should be great..
That will help him in 4 low but not daily driving.

It will be slow, Im used to it. What 22re isn't?

It will be fine on the trail and thats what matters. I will be driving it on freeway to Langley from Mission during the week for a little while after its done, but most likely will keep using my commuter car after the novelty wears off.

I know I hate reading too. I will take some pics of all my gear sitting in its packaging too, as well my tires etc.

Got my front third back with gears/locker installed.
Going to start flat bottoming my dif housing now, then put the axel under the truck.

After that, the knife is going to the rear suspension.

In the meantime I will be purchasing some parts, then bringing my engine in for a complete rebuild... ooo Im getting anxious.

NIce build ill keep an eye on it.

I agree the when you said in post #1 that you were running 4.56's with 36's (or 35's) I perked up bc i wanted to see how you fit a big block in that thing. I was running 35's with 4.88 and the v6 and I ALWAYS was downshifting. I strongly suggest 5.29's.
