Still Deciding 2wd to 4wd
I want to convert my 2002 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner to a 4wd. I realize the costs, it would be cheaper to just go out and buy a 4x4. I want to know what I would need to accomplish converting it from 2wd to 2wd. From what im guessing, 4wd auto tranny(with the hi, lo) transfer case, and front axle... What else, not a whole lot of fab right, The Prerunner and 4x4 body and frame works are the same. only difference is the rear diff, and something else and its 4x4. But What do i need to buy. I would think it would all be bolt on bolt of stuff and when it comes to modifying the floor shifter to put in the 4x4 hi lo shifter i will get a fab shop or something to do that.
What do i need to buy, and some other info on why or why not to do it.
Also what are some problems i could run into down the road?
If i do go through with it i wont buy a old Jeep wrangler 4x4.. i would lift it up about 6'' with a 35'' BFgoodrich Mud Terrain tire......

Considering that you have to go into the rear diff to accommodate for the gearing, I'd suggest going to someone experienced.
I second sdastg1's recommendation.

Yeah i know about the rear diff. im going to take it to a local car mod shop and see if they would do it. ( they have a lift and all that and i would get a discount on installation!) so i will need the front axle, tranny with transfer case, and the rear diff, also the floor shifter with the hi lo.......

not sure about tacos...but in the pre-taco days of the pickup, there were other differences between 2wd and 4wd trucks...
rear springs were SUA on 2wd, SOA on 4wd. torsion bars on 2wd were connected to lower A-arm...on 4wd, they were connected to upper A-arm. (not that your truck has torsion bars, but it might have some other differences in the front suspension between 2wd and 4wd). the front portion of the frame was different, etc.
just a heads up to make sure you find out *all* the differences before starting the project...

Question to ask yourself is what you are going to use truck for.
I was contemplating converting my 2WD T100 to stright axle 4x4 but heck why to do that for. I got myself `88 4runner. Truck will be geared, locked on MT tires for less than 3k total including purchase price. (everthing rebuild to include AC hehe...) It will go places taco can`t dream of, not to mention one or two dents more doesn`t really matter.
For PreRunner I would get TRD axle with locker, regear it for big tires and you have quite capable vehicle, good looking, not hurting resale.
For what you ask, 2WD to 4WD, sound like lots of trouble, better accomplished by swapping vehicles. I bet it will be cheaper just to pay difference between 4WD and 2WD not to mention headaches, down time and Murphy law.
As for differences between two tacos do not forget wire harness and computers.

^^^ after seeing what all has to be done, welding, cutting, gearing, refurbishing parts im not sure if i want to take hold of this kind of a project. yeah, it would be a great experiance i would learn alot but, down time, $$$, and alot of hassle finding a shop that will do it right and not half doing it.... I believe it would be best to just buy me a 4wd truck, thinking about a old 4wd jeep wrangler, i know I know its not a toyota. Well to tell you the truth even old toyota's are expensive. im looken to spend a max of $4500... but im still deciding, if i want to buy a offroad vehicle or buy some kind of tuner car lancer,miata,celica,240...etc... i havent decided, but you know chicks dig big rigs!
