Ring and Pinion...Is more better?

So the plan is to swap in 4.88 gears both front and rear. My 90 came stock with 4.56 and 2 pinion, according to off-roads chart. So when doing the swap, can I go from 2 pinion to 4 (which seems to be more common for the V6) or does it not matter.

I run 32's with the V6, manual tranny and stock 4.56 gears. I can do 70 miles per hour @3000rpm.

I want 4.88 gears to increase power and probably to accomodate 33's in a while. Would doing this swap dramatically change rpm's at speed? Or would it be best to wait for the 33's to swap gears?

IMHO, it is not worth it to only make that small jump.

IMHO, this is off-road tech.

I am not exactly sure how you got a 2 pinion diff in a 4wd V-6.

Axel code G252. According to off-raods chart, is 2 pinion. What results from only having 2 as oppsed to 4?

I think 4:88's is just right for 33's with a manual. With that said 4:56's are certainly livable . If you must regear, I would find a bad rear (3rd) and rebuild it and find a wrecking yard factory 4:88 front . Then sell your 4:56s to recoupe you cost. BTW I don't think this is just offroad tech.

I agree with Adrian, that small a change probably won't be worth the expense unless you can find complete thirds for sale for cheap.

In the early years of the V6 diff (up to about '91), 2-pinion V6 diffs weren't uncommon at all. AFAIK, '88 V6 diffs were all 2-pinion.

Also, to clear up a little possible confusion, the "pinion" in "ring & pinion" is not the same "pinion" in "4-pinion". They are entirely different gears. In order to swap from 2-pinion to 4-pinion, you have to get a different carrier. Swapping ring & pinions does not (usually) require this.
