22R Engine replacement problems

I have a 87 Toyota 4X4 that sat for about 1 and half years. I just put in a ussed engine that I bought from a shop that sells used engines. The truck will not start I have checked all the wires and made sure the Distributor is set to tdc
with the rotor pointing to #1 wire on the distributor. I replaced the fuel pump. I am thinking that I need to replace the carberator. But it should at least start and run pourly if something was wrong with the Carberator. the engine is getting spark and I put fuel in the carberator. does anyone have any ideas on what I should check next. Thanks Fon...

What exactly is it doing when you try to start it? That'll help to narrow it down between electrical and mechanical.

Also, if you replace the carb, be very careful. Get a japanese carb. and call some garages to see if they will work on that carb. if need be. I replaced mine with a holley reman and no one would work on anything but a "TOYOTA" carb. Only like 2 shops said they would work on another kind, but they had to be Aisin or Fujitsibu(I think thats the name, probably wrong though), or something like that, basically a japanese rebuilt carb.

the engine cranks over but will not fire. It is not getting any gas to the carb. I put gas in the carb but it still would not fire. I did make sure it is getting spark and adjusted the distributor to 180 out. Still no luck I know I have a fuel problem but I would think it would start from putting fuel in the carb.

I'd check your fuel line for any kinks, check all the vacuum connections on the carb, and maybe replace the fuel pump. Since you're not getting fuel to the carb, it sounds like the pump isn't doing its job. Have you tried pumping the accelerator twice then starting? Or maybe done a rich start where you hold the pedal down then crank till it goes? That's all I know of what to do.

Try posting your question in the 4Runner/ Truck forum, you'll get a better response.
