max tire size for 03 sequoia 4x4 w/out lift

hi all - first post here at this forum. took me a while to find a this place.

checking to see if anyone can help guide me here. i would like to bump up my tire size on my 03 sequoia 4x4. as a few of you know they come stock w/ 265/65-17 bridgestone ht's. toyota and the manual also state you can go with 265/70-17. can one go bigger without rubbing. i will not be lifting this truck, at least for a while. i'm thinking 275/70-17 ,or if they would fit 285/70-17 . I also find differing figures on the width of the stock wheel. Some say 7" and some say they are 7.5".

interested in bridgestone at's, bfg at's & mt's and goodyear at's & mt's .

btw - the folks at tirerack said it is not possible to go any bigger than 265/70 -17 due do the design (would rub quite a bit).

many thanks - gasoel

265/70/17 would be your safest bet, i'd think.

bump for someone else to answer!

I did the 265/70-17 on my 4th gen 4runner. They fit just fine without any rubbing. Anything much taller and you start getting a large speedometer error. There is no way to correct speedo error without an aftermarket gadget like from SuperLift for $200.

well, not just the speedo issue, but you can NOT go any larger than 265/70/17 on the 4th gen. 4runner without rubbing. i have a 4" lift and my 275/70/17s rub enough that i cannot comfortably turn the wheel completely to the right without it feeling like it's tearing something off. i would assume that the sequoia couldn't fit larger than a 265/70 without a lift.

the speedo error is not that big with larger tires ... a ton of people here at yotatech run 285s or 33s or larger, and have done nothing to correct the speedo. running 275s, mine did not have a very noticeable error. there are online calculators to figure out how much the speedo is off with a certain size tire, then you can just keep that in mind as you're driving and not need any gadget at all.

there's a calculator for the speedometer error.

going from 265/65 to 265/70 = 3.4% difference so if your speedo shows 60mph, you're actually going 62mph.

going from 265/65 to 275/70 = 5.2% difference so if your speedo shows 60mph, you're actually going 63mph.

going from a 265/65 to 285/70 = 7.0% difference so if your speedo shows 60mph, you're actually going 64mph.

The speedo error itself is not that big of a deal. But I heard the anti-lock brakes are wired into the speedo so to speak. I should have explained myself a little better.

thanks all for the input. much appreciated. think i will stick with a 265/70 17 then. maybe i'll go with an MT to rally up the look a bit. may prompt me to hit the trails a tad more as well.

all is good with 14K except they can't dial in the alignment (at least i feel they can't). strange slight cherping type clatter coming from the right front wheel area as well. i'm sure my dealer will not hear it when it goes in for the 15k!

cheers - gasoel
