The only reason that I would buy one is because there isn't anything else out there right now that I would want.

If I bought brand new...

It would be the newer 4 door Tacoma that will be coming out later this year.

It will sport a full size bed instead of the shorter one it has now, and it will also have the 4.0 V6 that the 4th gen 4Runner gets later this year too.

And the guy who made my sliderz already makes gear for it such as sliderz and bumpers.
The above pic is his wife's before the new off road tires and sliderz were put on.

Fresh review of an '03. Noteworthy because this guy lives in Detroit, too!

Can't wait!

No I wouldn't (even if I had the money). I would either get a used 3rd gen with locker, a new xterra, or a new 4door taco with locker, in that order.

Even my wife said the new 4runner is ugly. It's too low, but I think the width is alright.

Took A Closer Look...

I took about 45 minutes (the legnth of time to get a Toyota oil change) and really looked at the 2003 4Runner.

First off, I noticed the increase in the interior space over my 3rd gen. I thought the dash was ok... nothing special, but I liked it.

The outside just sucks. I tried to like it... I really did but I never could convience myself. I liked a lot of the features of the Sport but hated the expanse of plain gray plastic cladding. If I got one of these machines I would DEFINATELY get a Limited or hold out until Toy paints them on the Sport.

The salesman told me that the ground clearance was the same as my 97 but I think not. The rear pumpkin seemed a lot closer to the ground than my current rig.

Would I trade my 97 for a 2003? HECK NO!!! I'll wait and see what comes out later. I like the front end and I like the fact that Toyota kept the retractable rear window. I don't find myself looking for 03 Runners on the road like I have done with the previous 3 generations. Maybe it is because it looks so generic now... like all the other SUV's... yawn.....

I think I will just get a 98 Land Cruiser and see about dropping in an Isuzu deisel in it...

Oh yeah! Me likes that Land Cruiser!

The salesman at the Toy place did mention that an FJ40-ish 4x4 was in the works... I thought he was kidding...

THERE IS HOPE!

The above LC can be bought outside of the US.
There is a site that shows a lot of cool Toyota LC's, but you can't get them here.

Here is another radical 2 door model.

Here is another model of LC I wouldn’t mind having.

It is a LC73.

Another cool one.

It is a diesel BJ70, and you can go up to Canada to get these, as some are imported up there.

As you can see, the last two nice ones also have left hand drive.

PS, one more left hand drive rig.

Here is a 40 sytle of LC that is a 2001 model, and left hand drive as well.

We just can't get these nice Toy's stateside.

With you guys that have boughten 3rd gen's, of course you all are going to say it's ugly because you just bought something fairly recent and don't want to part with it (especially considering monthly payments and all). Your rigs do you fine in every category and that's why you like it and hate everything else compared to it, even if it's newer or maybe slightly better. That's how I see it...but otherwise, it really isn't a bad looking SUV for the limited, it could some slightly asthetic modding, but otherwise is a very nice fitting vehicle.

I'll give you another example, I love my Tundra, and think hell of other trucks and even the new ugly-a$$ chrome front end, but honestly there are better choices out there like the '02 (not '03) Silverado which out-performs my Tundra in a good amount of aspects (except crash results), and I agree with Consumer Reports when they say, "it's a comptent truck, and would be recommended if not for its subpar reliability record."

Third example is when I had my 4Runner, I didn't like the new look of the 3rd Gen as much as compared to my 2nd gen, until it grew on me about four years later, especially with the '00 sports model. But still it's my vehicle, I like it, and no one could say otherwise.

that's just my take on this whole thing, no pun intended... !

yeah i see what you're saying mohamed, but with me at least that's not the case. i have an 02. but i almost waited for the 03. i got mine back in june. after going back and forth between the 02 and 03, i sure am glad i got a 2002.

haha, nate c. i guess i agree. i do really like the new 4runners, except for the look. maybe that's superfiscial, but i gotta have a car that performs well, is durable, and looks good. tho if i could't have a 3rd gen 4runners, i'd probably go for a 4th gen. either that or an xterra. better luck with the 5th gens.
