Just go wheeling with someone with a real winch. A 6000 is on the border of what a 1st gen Runner needs. I got an 8000 to be on the safe side. Its up to your judgement as to wether its a safe pull. It may help get you out of a little stuck but don't get crazy with it.

Depends what the winch on it is, but ya pretty much pointless as you'll have to double-line it for any real serious pull. Keep safety in mind when using it, any winch can seriously injure or even kill you if not handled properly. You mention that it hooks over a trailer ball. Never use a trailer ball as a recovery point, they can and have snapped off and when that happens the ball flys off and can do some serious harm.
