Will a 2000 3.4L bolt into my 1996 chassis?

I have a 1996 4runner 3.4L that leaks coolant. The engine already has 400 000 Km on it so I bought another 3.4 I saw out of a 2000 4runner, it was only $600 and came with a harness and a box of extras.

Will this be a straight bolt in?

Will the 2000 wire harness plug into my 1996 chassis?

I will only have a few days off to get this done, if I am going to need a new ECU or something else I want to have that before I start.

Thanks

Is the leak coming from the motor? or from an external hose? If it is external swapping the motor will not help anything. These motors are bullet proof, no reason to mess with them unless it has a problem.

If you do swap motors, the block ect are all the same, you might need to swap some external parts around from your old motor, sensors ect but it should all bolt right on.

The motor harness should plug right in to your existing ECU. You may have issues with the transmission harness though.. On the 99 and 2000 the transfer case had the auto push button 4x4 and your 96 didn't.. If you use the harness from your 96, and swap out the accessories (if they're different) you should be fine... Leave the 2000 Fuel rail and injectors, they are different from your 96... I swapped a 99 motor/trans into a 97 Harness and everything runs great.. PM me if you have any issues. You should be able to pull the motor, swap harnesses, and put it back in in 2-3 days... depending on your mechanical skills.

ok, thanks for the information It looks like I might be getting to this within the next 2 weeks.

taylorf18 - I have the push button 4x4 on the transfer case shifter, I'm not sure if its the same one you are talking about

Texas Ace - I had antifreeze in the combustion chamber. In the morning I have to let it run for a bit before I move it, It has been this way for about a year and after a 6 hour drive at 130Km/hr it got worse. I would have to let it run for a good minute before the miss would clear up and then it would smoke for a good 5 minutes. I put some of that bars stop leak and it stopped the miss and the white smoke.

the best way to do the swap would be to get everything from the donor vehicle, including electronics (different from 1996), transmission (has a few electronic tweaks), transfer case, airbag sensors (different from 1996), brake master cylinder (different from 1996 if it has the VSC/Trac), rear brake lines if the donor vehicle has VSC/Trac, and aircondition control module which is controlled by the ECU if it's a Limited.

Note: VSC/Trac came out late 2000 for the 2001 model year units
