Why does everyone mess with the 3.0?

first let me say.... i love my 4runner....
with that said.... the 3vze is a sorry engine.... low on power, poor gas mileage and inherent design flaws that cause headgasket failure....
now if it was fast and got poor mileage, ok..... or if it was slow and gas effiecient, ok....
but to be powerless and get 13mph plus have inevitable headgasket leaks is unforgivable for any car/truck.... even for one built in the 80's/90's....
let me clarify.... i love my truck.... but i'm just hardpressed to find something nice to say about the 3.0...
just my 2cents.... thanks for letting me vent

I've driven three 2nd gens and I've driven 4 3rd gens (owned two) and once you've driven a 3.4 the 3.0 feels real slow and I can't imagine going backwards to a 2nd gen as a DD but a dedicated off road truck a 2nd gen would rock but for towing and general driving the 3.Slo isn't enough for me. I've also driven a current gen V6 and V8 and they make the 3rd gens seem like a 2nd gen but I'm content with my 3rd gen for NOW.

my girlfriends dad has a 90 GMC c2500 with well over 200k, never opened up.
all three of the trucks i mentioned had a couple things in common. they were all daily driven, and they worked their asses off from day one. they were also well maintained, and thats all it takes.

[QUOTE=3car]are you questioning the reliability and durability of the 4.3 and GM small block engines?

Yeah, I was being cheaky/my typical sarcastic self. My understanding of Chev's was that they put out a reasonable product in terms of reliablity in the late 80's/early 90's, and since then it's been all down hill. They are STILL working out the bugs on their 99-current gen of full size trucks. Hence they have earned the nickname "slaperados."
I still think Toyota did a damn good job on their first V6. It's still more reliable on average than anything Chevy/GMC has put out.

I dont mind my 3.0. even with an auto, 4.10's, and 33's, its not that bad. 5.29's will be in there before too long, and that will help with pulling the boat down the road and passing 22re's on 2 lane roads. [QUOTE=CoedNaked]

I've known quite a few Chevy 350s and they've all been pretty good motors in terms of reliability. Not to mention they are cheap to fix, easy to work on, and actually have something we 3.slow owners envy, power.

a 4.3 is way more reliable. I have 3 friends who are mechanics (own their own shops, make a living off it) that will tell you that the 3.0 is the worst toyota engine ever. A 4.3 gm is way better.

is it me, or am I the only one that has noticed that this thread was opened up saying, I hate it when people say the 3.0 is slow, then... the thread ends up talking about how everyone deals with it being slow, but its a good engine (I'm not disagreeing... I don't have any experience with them). Just a slight observation on the thread.

Every time I hear some swaping out good toyota motors for that junk 4.3, it makes me cringe.
The hole reason I own a toyota is because that damn chevy
I have nothing aganst the small block 350.Its a proven reliable motor, but anyone doing a swap please please please stay far away from the 4.3.I hate that engine with a passion.

As much as I like the 3vze, the 4.3L is a much much much more powerful motor than the 3.0. And it is not uncommon for that engine to last every bit as long if not longer than the 3vze. Either he got a bad block, didnt have it rebuilt correctly, or never changed the oil. Im betting the middle one...
But I'd not ever put a chevy engine into my yota - I dont want a toylet...LOL
