Where to get a good cheap paint job?!?!

I am seriously thinking of gettin my 4Runner painted black at a cheap price. Any idea where I can get it painted decently at a shop that has good prices? I really want a all black 4Runner including rims etc. Anyway my insurence would pay for the paint job? Did I mention how bad I wanted a Black 4Runner???

Uhhhh...Adam...dats RED hehe...good one. Clayton, in my experience with paint shops and painting in general, good rarely goes with cheap. Unless you know someone who'll give ya a deal with quality work. Best bet is call around for price quotes. When you find a good price, go down and inspect the finished car with the paint in the price range. If it meets your expectations, strike the deal. Good luck.

EClayton,

Are you sure you want black? Black is a gigantic mother to keep scratch and swirl free. Metallic blue is probably a close second. But man, when a black car is shiny, watch out!

And Brian is right: you get what you pay for. My friend owns a body shop up in the SJ/Bay Area in CA. He says customers come in all the time shocked when he quotes them a price for a paint job---thats until he pulls out two plates of painted metal and shows them the difference between a good paint job and a poor one.

Also, you have to consider that if you want it to look totally factory new, they have to pull out everything out of your engine. Additional costs there too! And do you really want to run the risk of them pulling everything out and reinstalling it back in? Not me.

Bob

Good point Bob (sounding like a radio talk show now )..changing color will ring up the tab. ALL your interior panels will have to be removed to paint the jambs. Labor charges right there. I saved some money on my Datsuns repaint when I removed all exterior chrome (grille, headlight doors, emblems etc) interior panels and anything I could take off. Gave me time to clean up everything. When the car was finished (I love the smell of fresh paint) I got to put everything back carefully and perfectly. I really enjoyed that. Call around, some shop will work with ya.

Has anyone changed the color of their vehicle? And how much did it cost? I'm looking to do the same thing to my truck when I get it by taking the money I get from selling my mustang.

I second that. You definitely get what you pay for, and you do not want your 4Runner to look bad for a cheap paint job! Shop around and look for quality before quantity. Goodluck! :fireman:

The bottom line:

You can get a good paint job, but it won't be CHEAP, or you can get a cheap paint job, but it won't be GOOD.

You can't get a GOOD, CHEAP paint job.

I had my Runner repainted. Someone had some roof damage and elected to fix it the cheap way with cheap paint. Ive also found other maintance cost cutting measures done also to this Runner. We gog it in 97. In 2000, the top paint was cracking and peeling. So we opted to have the whole thing repainted with the same color. Shop was a good quality shop that was only about 3 to 3 years old. Their work was good. The best body shop in town recomended them for our 4 runner as they did not do cars this old, and only did partial repaints with lifetime warrantee for mega insurance bucks. Had about 30 to 40 years in business here. Having had my GP repainted in 91, I knew that quality shops would charge at least 2000.00.
The shop I went to charged 1500.00 for the same color repaint. It looks good. Not quite factory, but then again, factory or show quality is mega bucks. Im very picky about the paint and I tell you that this shop did a good job. Base coat clear coat by PPG. I asked about changing color and they were talking another 800 to 1000. I read on the ODW that Firefyter thought around 2500.00 for same color paint. I asked him questions when I was looking to get our runner painted. Sooo... If you want to have a repaint for less than 1000.00, your gonna have to really know somebody, but expect 1500 to 3000 for quality same color work and probably 1000 more for color change. Or go with the " Ill paint any car for 99.95"
