"SR5 stands for Sport Ralley 5 Speed. This is simply an upgrade trim package that was available similar to a Ford Lariat or a Chevy Silverado. Earlier model trucks had bucket seats, additional gauges/tach, stripes, carpet floors, and cloth interior. Later model trucks, although still SR5s, may have come with automatic transmissions. SR5 models do not necessarily come with air, tilt, chrome trim, power steering, or sun roof. Trucks with the SR5 package can usually be identified by finding an 'S' in the VIN code."

The 84 and 85 SR5s had SR5 repeated a thousand times on the upholstery too.

It started in the mid 70s when 5 speeds were just coming into vogue. It was big deal to have a 5 speed then (rather than a 4 speed) and the SR5 distinguished the descriminating driver... For many years the SR5 was the top-of-the-line model.

Funny Mine is an SR5. I dont have Power Anything, No Tilt, No Cruise, o Fancy trim package (Not that I want ANY of that with the way I bash on the truck)

So I guess the SR5 just means its a 5 Speed. Kinda like how they Used to Brag about a vechile being Fuel Injected back in the day.

Back in 1997 I test drove a 94 Toyota pickup SR5 and it didn't have any power options.

Quite interesting, Michael and Travis.

When I was looking for my truck, I looked so hard for an SR5. I was able to find only one or two, niehter in good condition so I just settled in with the non-SR5. Now that I realize, there are many more non-SR5 than SR5s.

Only if I had the tachometer.

I have a '98 Taco SR5, but it has the split bench, no cruise and no power accessories. But it does have the requisite 5 speed! Basically SR5 is a leftover from the days when 5 speeds were still rare.

SR5 are available with an auto too, I'm afraid, have been since I can remember (and I can remember all the way back into the 70s) since 85 for certain. About all it really got you in the later years was gauges, better seats, and a mid-line radio. In the earlier years the difference was more noticeable, you got a nicer interior (cloth instead of vinyl) tilt wheel, chrome steel wheels, mirrors on both sides, and better sound insulation in the doors and floor and firewall plus the gauges and a decent stereo in the days when factory stereos were crap (I know they still are, but I mean REALLY crap.) Toyota was one of the first car companies to put a really decent stereo in. The top-of-the-line stereo, moonroof, power options, 8way adj seats, air conditioning and chrome trim were still options, but you could only get them on an SR5. MY 85 had every available option, a short list in those days. AC, chrome pkg, power pkg (which didn't include power locks yet, it was power windows and intermittant wipers) moonroof, 8way seats, am/fm CAssette with equalizer and 4 speakers plus subwoofer, special color (gold pearl clear coat, $509) rear seat heater. Sticker was $18,800. I miss those days. Even so, it was expensive just like today. A loaded S10 Blazer or Cherokee then, with every option (including a V6! cough cough 2.8 cough) was only $14,000.

My SR5 has everything: cruise, tilt, guages, PS, rear ABS, auto/overdrive (A430e), AC, no sunroof (Think that was an option. Not sure about the Limited edition though, might be standard there).

I am a storage person and it truly bothers me that my truck does not come with a center console and no door side pockets as my doors are just slick. Wack.

SR5 doesn't really have much meaning any more. most autos aren't 5 speeds, and i'd never dare call anything with a slushbox "sporty"
