Talking What I learned this weekend...or the ups and downs of being a shade-tree mechanic...

I put new rotors and pads on my 4runner this weekend. These are my findings (some after being taken to school by a brake expert!):

1)Drum brakes are a mystery, until you get physical with them once. Or twice in my case!
2)Rotors and pads practically put themselves on. It's too simple for anyone NOT to do.
3)Bleeding (or flushing) your system is not rocket science. It's actually pretty hard to mess up. Especially if you DID NOT open up the system (read: take anything OFF)
4)Low pedal does not necessarily mean air in the brake lines. In my case, It was the fact that I had the brakes shoes adjusted about a mile and a half away from drum!
5)There is no substitute for having the right tools! (read: it's hard to beat things loose without a vise!)
6)Just 'cos you *(think)* you may know what the problem is - doesn't mean your theory holds water. Never be afraid to learn, especially from a expert.
7)Kevlar pads really do stop nice (we'll see how they wear in the long run and how they interact with the rotors)

thanks for listening!->[/rant]
