The 20R and early 22R have the domed pistons, late 22R's have the flat top piston.
No you can't put a late 22R head on a 20R or early 22R block, that's where the major head/piston interference comes in.
As for the early head onto the late block, it can be done, but you won't be using a toyota chain for the timing chain, and your chamber volume has increased a significant amount.

20r was in all pickups and the celica and corona until 1980, replaced by 22r in 1981
i believe some 22r engines were efi in '84, most of them started in 85 i think.
i'm pretty sure that a 20r head will work on a laser block if it is milled down to use the single roller chain. 20r head is superior to a 22r head because it uses a hemi design(a 20r is a hemi engine ), whereas the 22r has a swirl type combustion chamber

livelarg,
The 3.4 and the 3.0 use the same block (kind of like the 20r and 22r), so the transmissions will bolt up the same way ("drop in" swap).
toypartsdude,
No worries man
I've been known to do the same thing on more than one occasion.

1st gen supra - 1979(??) to 1982 (really that's a Celica Supra)
2nd gen supra - '82 (or close) to '86.5
3rd gen supra '86.5 - 92 7MGTE first used
4th gen supra - 92-98
To clear that up just a little bit.....

>>"I'm drawing a blank for the nomenclature for the new (2005+) 2.7l engine. Perhaps someone can fill this in."<<
Filled!
The '05 2.7L I4 is called the 2TR–FE engine;
The '05 4.0L V6 is called the 1GR–FE engine.

jeez...the RZ engine is out already, after only about 10 years
compare that to the R engine, which lasted more than 40.
then again, other countries will probably get the RZ motors still...

Yeah, I suspect that the rest of the planet will continue to get RZ engines for years to come..
They should have labeled the new 2.7L, 3TR, instead of 2TR..
2TR-FE just doesn't sound right, IMHO.
