Talking weber carb upgrade on 85

Hey all, this weekend I am going to be removing the stock carb on my toy and replacing it with a Redline Weber kit #K 8749. This should allow me to retain the stock air cleaner setup (needed so my motor will draw in warm air when attempting to warm up in -20* weather). I am excited to see what kind of performance increase I will see. Anyone do the same or a similar upgrade? The motor has 175k on it, with about 15k since it was rebuilt. The carb is stock, untouched. I am currently getting sub-par mileage (~15mpg in 2wd with 70%/30% highway/city driving). Will my truck see better mileage with this carb upgrade? What kind of performance increase will i be looking at? If you have done the swap, I am open to any insight that you may have to make the job a little easier. Thanks!

BTW: My truck is an 85 22r (carbed obviously), xtra cab longbed.

I want to do the weber carb, but am really hesitant with my extremely poor luck with 2 holleys, leaving me with my original carb anyway.

I believe there is one or two guys on here who have a weber on it, or have had a weber on their toys. From what I hear there is a performance increase, with the 36-38, not sure about the smaller one though. Good luck with it, and tell us how it turns out!

That's too bad.. what kind of problems did you have with the holleys?

My dad had pretty close to the same 32/36 weber setup on his 79 2wd pickup for years, and it really made a difference on his. I'm hoping for the same on mine. The 22r is a good motor, but a little underpowered. Plus my tires are a little oversized, so my gearing is a little off too, which doesn't help...

aside from the manual choke and a few wierd quirks, i really like the 32/36 on my 20R. if i had a 22R though, i'd get a 38mm, since the 32/36 actually has a lower CFM than the stock 22R carb.

I used to run a 38mm Weber and in stock form, mileage and HP actually increased. Cold weather starts and drivability wasn't too good though. If you stay away from steep hills and off camber situations they'll run great.

I purchased a holley reman carb, and when I got it all installed, it just dumped fuel down the metering valve (I think that's what it is called). I couldn't hold an idle, it ran really rough, and no matter how i adjusted mixture settings and everything, it ran rough. Called holley for customer support. Of the 30 times I called, I got through once. I even called during nonbusy hours during the week. The one time I got through, the guy was a complete jerk and told me to do something I had already done 3 times, and I explained that to him. He told me to do it again and call back. Well like I said, I only got through once. Took it to my mechanic, no luck there either, he said it was defective. My friend called a holley specialist in cali that built a custom carb for his stang, and even he didn't know what was wrong. So I returned it, got another one, and the exact same problem. I thought about contacting holley for mechanic's fee compensation, but I read somewhere on the warranty contract, they would not reimburse me. It just left a very bad taste in my mouth, a shame since my dad has had alot of success with holley's on his chevelle and other muscle cars.

I learned though that japanese carburetors are very hard to tune and duplicate, that if you wish to replace it with a reman, to get a Denso or this other japanese company (not AISIN though).

Speaking of off camber. Wheeling this weekend I was on a 40-45* slope (not camber) and my stock carb was dying. If I let off the gas, the rpms would drop to like 300. Ran fine so long as I kept on the gas though, and never quit when it was idling like that.

Just put the 32/36 Redline k746 on my 85 4x4 22r last weekend. Runs really bad. Less power ,less miles per gallon, won't idle. Still working on it but I'd get lots of info before I'd swap.I just joined this forum today to get some help hopefully. So just thought I'd share my mistake.
