Used oil storage containers: I need one that works!
Anybody else tired of cheap-o used oil containers that leak and drip after you put oil in them? I have one right now that really sucks. This is it:
This thing leaks and drips - in my vehicles when I go to the oil recycling place. I hate it!
I searched around forever, but this is the best I could find from a design standpoint (visually). Besides those things that suck up oil from the dip stick hole, do you guys know of a good container that actually works, under $20?

Take what you have and put it in a Hefty Lawn and Leaf bag (thick black ones) before you put it in the runner and you won't have to worry about finding a new one or getting stains from the leaks.

hey christian,
I have the same crappy thing as you do but i dont transport it in there anymore. i used to put it in a box that is lined w/ a garbage bag. sdastg1 was really complimentary of how tidy my hands were when i was pouring my used oil on his front lawn.
tip: go ask the guys at the oil change places if they have those big 5 or 6 gallon bottles that theyre throwing away. i have two now
i just use a funnel to pour it in those. much better.

Hmmm, good idea Bob. My local camping store has some pretty nifty fresh water/misc containers (not intended for oil of course) that just might do the trick too.

I drain it into this old "pan" and dump it into either used bleach bottles (big ones) or into 5 gallon buckets if I have some lying around.
Then I just take it all to the city recycling yard and drop it off and thats that for that. No having to drain anything and wait for it back.

I reuse the 2½ gallon Amsoil ATF container left over from my ATF service to transport my used oil. I put the 2½ gal in an old milk crate so I won't fall over when cornering...

I use a basic pan. I save a milk jug or two and pour the oil in them (also the 5 qt jug the new oil came in.) I can carry them, open them, pour the oil in the recycler, toss the jug in the bin, and my hands stay clean.

Do you guys pay to recycle it? Just wondering.
The auto stores here make you pay, but you can do it for free through the city. Another reason for high taxes.
One auto store is a ¼ mile away from this place too.
Dump all kinds of batteries and stuff.
Just not Gasoline, asbestos and the likes. (that is what it reads on the gate.)

I know I have. In fact, that is why I went to the above pictured "superior" oil container to begin with. The stinkin oil would never pour right during transfer to milk containers, etc.

I do all fluid transfers over a litter box with speedy dry in it.
Just like cat litter but more absorbent.
The people that like to dump the oil down the storm drains messed it up for people that like to do their own on the street here.

Buy those microbes that they used to "eat" the oil from tanker spills. Can be the next new trendy pet. Think they'll like synthetics? I wonder what they poop out.

If you looked at the floor of my storage unit where I transfer all my oil you can tell I always have problems. :pat:
