Unimog vs. My Work Truck w/ Pics

These are some pics of a Unimog that was in town a few months back. I actually got to go for a little offroading in it-that thing is a beast-basically you make your own trail. I just uploaded these pics, so they may not be up just yet, but here goes:

Those things are huge! There is a blue 4 door one usually at the Motorcyle store by my house. They have portal axles right?

Actually, my dad's best friend had one for about 6 months. He would go down to Baja for surf trips in it, but, the thing had major problems. It was extremely impractical.

I cant remember what exactly happend, but, it basically wasnt very dependable for long mile trips...(especially into 3rd world countries)

Still, those things are just awesome to drive around in.

I've had one for years. Haven't driven it for a while, but it will go anywhere you point it. My unimog is a 1962 404.1 military communication van that has been converted to a camper. I even lived in it for six weeks a while back. It has a 2.2L inline six with 82 HP at the flywheel. Six forward and two reverse gears, part time four wheel drive with mechanical locking differentials. It has portal axles with about 16 inches of ground clearance. Top speed is 59 MPH. You can order parts through MB. Takes a while for delivery.

I am probably going to sell it one day as I just do not have the time for it any more

Oh yeah, 52" Michelins on the Mog and 33" Mud Kings on the GMC. I'm not sure what motor was in it, but it was a diesel and it had the mechanical lockers front and rear. It also had a 20 ton hydraulic winch and a custom built bed that housed 2 full size spares and he was in the process of making the bed into a camper.

there are so many variations of these things too. a Doka (double cab) with a dump bed would be pretty sweet

Someone should put a tarp over the GMC. Surely it is very ashamed to be beside something so clearly superior.

The two best 4wd vehicles on the planet.

Platform389, what is that white beast next to the GWagon? Is that a newer and bigger Mog?

Don't hate the GMC, it's been a great truck. I have had virtually no problems with it until recently, the transfer case needs replacing. But, it goes into 4wd everyday, so the 4wd has a ton of miles on it.
