Too much oil

Just changed my oil and I had a bit of a surprise. This is only the second time that I've personally changed the oil on this truck. I normally always change my own oil but I let the dealership change it over the winter once. Take a look at the sticker on the oil pan. Specifically the capacity of the oil pan and how much oil is in the pan.

You would think that putting 5.2 quarts in, one would not get out almost 7 quarts.

Anyone suggestions for how to deal with this? The dealership either didn't drain it completely or added too much oil.

What kind of damage can a quart and a half too much oil do?

Are you sure the sticker is correct, it wouldn't be the first time a company has advertised something incorrectly.

If it really was overfilled then the problem is that if the oil is above the bottom of the crank then it gets air mixed into it, and air isn't a good lubricant. Running like that could do some damage to the engine, but I would think you'd here some lifter noise.

Had you checked the oil since it last got changed. Any time I get someone else to change my oil, which is very rarely, I always pull the dipstick and check the level and colour before driving away. Dealerships don't exactly use their most experienced techs to do oil changes.

I know that my 3.4 always takes 6qts. Exactly, whenever I change the oil and filter together. They might fill your oil with a hose with a digital meter filler and the battery could be getting low causing it to read incorrect. Then on top of it you have $8.00/hr lube tech filling it with out checking it after starting.I would call them and let them know, they may give you a free oil change in return.

Also keep in mind that the 7 quarts marked on the pan may be what it will hold safely without overflowing when one is doing an oil change.

It's also a good idea to check the dip stick right after an oil change no matter who does it as well as every few weeks.Mike

Usually stay on top of things mechanical. I can't remember when I last checked fluid levels but I know that I have several times since the last oil change and everything was fine. I'm going to chalk this up to an engine holding more than it's posted capacity and an oil pan that's not quite as big as it thinks it is. I've lived with that ÅÅÅÅty oil pan for too long. It's about time I find a bigger one that pours better. Anyone with a favourite?

I had a Chev dealership add one quart + too much in my older 4 cyl S10 a few years ago. There is NO EXCUSE. Perhaps there is a motive. Overfill and blow everyones oil seals and get return business ! Same thing with transmission fluid. I do all of my cars all of the time now.

Measure how much that pan will really hold. Another reason I do my own maintenance and repairs. I stick a whole 5 gallon bucket under mine to catch oil. It wont spill or splatter, it has a good lid, then after a few changes, it's off to the oil recycling place.

The Toyota stealership overfilled my mothers Camry every oil change and it now has some major oil leaks @100k miles. When she buys a new one I will be doing the oil changes. She had them replace $500 worth of gaskets and they forgot to put oil back in the engine. She drove it for several weeks like that. It now burns oil ,and she let it go too long to stick it to the dealership. Oh, and it is still leaking oil after the repairs they did.
