Timing belt estimates.

Belt and water pump;

Stealer: $900
Jap specialty shop: $800
Privately owned shop: $890

Rick Johnson auto&tire : $500

Rick's was the only one to not quote me labor for the water pump. Guess whos getting my business!

make sure they use oem parts not autozone or something else

Or you could do it yourself for about $250 and 4 hours of your time

how often should the timing belt be done..?? I assume it is a belt and not a chain. I've got 174,000kms on the clock now and to my knowledge the belt has not been changed. (bought it with 117,000kms)

As far as I know Toyota recommends it being changed at 90,000 miles (and you have about 108,000 miles on yours). I bought mine at 118,000 and the belt had never been changed. If you have a 4 cyl engine, it is a timing chain. If you have a 6-cyl, it's a belt and non-interfacing, so if it breaks the piston won't hit on the valves and cause turmoil.

I paid $700 in parts and labor at a shop where we know the mechanic some how, and he changed the belt, the water pump, all pulleys (including tensioner pulleys, which were worn and cost a lot of money), and filled it with new fluid.

they got your pants down on those quotes buddy! i paid 550 for t-belt, WP, and all new drive belts at the STEALER!!!

i suggest you call around all kinds of toyota dealers in the area, find a cheap one and have them fax it to you to show your "mom" then take it to your dealer and say....to go please, in the nicest way possible of course!

Local Stealership wanted $750. I just bought the parts (T-belt, H20 pump, Idler pullies, T-stat, accessory belts) from a YotaTech vendor for $275 and did it myself in about 4 hours...but if you've got a guy that will do everything and use Toyota parts for $500...go for it!

Whow as the vendor? I went to http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=214074 and it will still cost me about $325 for all the parts.

There was coupon last year that the stealer sent out for T belt change on a v6 for $219 I think. Parts and labor. Of course the recommended other work will they where in there put that was

Buy a Haynes manual and do it yourself. Its not that bad, I've done 2 of mine and wouldn't think of taking it to a local cheap shop to have it done. Good Luck!

Just because they say change it at 90k that dosn't mean you have to. As they say, it it works, leave it alone. A good friend has a 1998 runner with 167k on it, and is still with same belt.

Just had the stealer (Jerry's Toyota in Baltimore) do my timing belt on my 2000 4Runner with an online coupon of $229. I requested the aux belts be replaced also, so they did that for anothe $35. As I expected, he hit me up for a new water pump for $330 by claiming "it was leaking" - I railed into the tech saying I changed the oil on Christmas and there was NO SIGNS OF ANY LEAKS ANYWHERE - he quickly changed it to "seeping". I then bitched about how dealers lie and he knocked 20% off the total bill, I bitched some more and he said he wouldn't charge me for the shop supplies (usually $25) So I got the whole deal for about $575 with factory parts from the dealer.

I knew that the water pump should be changed with the timing belt, and expected they would mention it, but I didn't expect them to make up the whole "Leaking" bullsh/it.

I also requested an brake inspection with the thought I needed front pads, but surprisingly, They didn't and they gave me a nice brake report with no charge on the inspection.

Dealership quoted me $450 for tb/wp, no other belts, hoses or pulleys/idlers.

I did it myself....it's really not that hard except for the frickin' hydraulic tensioner when you don't have the tool, which I don't. Still, it wasn't rocket science even with a 2 year old rearranging all the carefully laid out parts. My pump showed no outward signs of leaking though I knew something was going on as I was occasionally adding antifreeze. Under the cover I found the gummy pink evidence. I change the oil in it too and had been keeping an eye out but hadn't seen anything leaking.

Who ever you have do it be sure they know that Toyota changed the torque spec for the crank pulley bolt to 217 ft-lbs on the 5VZFE. There is an incorrect spec out there of about 180 ft-lbs from many sources including some places in the FSM.

I started to change my 98 4runner at 90,000 miles, got it down to taking the crank pulley bolt off, and couldn't. That thing is on there, my impact didn't have anything for it. Put it back together and took it to a guy I know and I supplied the parts and he changed it for $165 including some of that expensive red antifreeze. He got the crank bolt out with a small ($500) Matco gun, and he didn't even have to take the radiator out.

$150 labor+parts for water pump, thermostat, and belt, parts were around $160
