timing a 85 22rec

I hope one of you guys can help me out with this one. I'm new to this forum and just came across it today. Finally some toyota talk. they usually run so good I can't find anyone who can fix one.

I a have a 85 22rec and I think the timing is messed up. It wasn't running right so a buddy messed around with the distributor and know it won't start. Does anyone know how to time this motor. I want to start from scratch.

Greetings & Welcome!
Have no fear, we'll get her in time again!
1st off, pop the distributer cap off and get the #1 cylinder to TDC,point your rotor to the #1 cylinder, (use this method if your buddy pulled the distributer out!)
after that she should be close in time! Get your timing light out and hook the P/U to the #1 cylinder wire, start her up! Turn your distributer until your timing marks are lined up to 10 dgrees? I don't remeber the specs for the 22, maybe 10 degrees. Someone else will have to chime in here or you might find it on the tech section.

thanks alot for the help harry. I could use a little help with the whole timing light thing, I love to wrench, but I haven't done much of this. Where am I going to point the light for the 10 degrees. Could this thing have skiped time before we ever messed with the distributor.

Yeah, the timing chain has probably hopped a tooth. If it was messed up before you messed with the distributor, that is most likely it. You ought to check it out anyway; they aren't too bad to replace. For a 22re, the timing should be set 5* BTDC. Hook up the light and point it at the crank pulley. There is a tab over the pully with marks for 0*, 4*, 5*, and 8* I believe. There is also a mark on the crank pulley; sometimes it is hard to see, higlight it with some chalk or something. Anyway, you shine the light right down there, and the idea is that the light pulses, and the mark on the tab above the pulley and the mark on the pulley line up; you rotate the distributor until you get them lined up where you want. On my 93, you have to jumper a couple contacts together in that little box on the passenger side of the engine compartment, TE1 and E1. Good luck

On the 85 there is a round plug by the air flow meter (2 of them actually) you jumper the 2 contacts inside the smaller plug (jumper wire, staple, etc) This sets the computer to base timing. Then you set the timing to specs (5 deg BTDC I believe)

Thanks alot guys for the input, I'm going to get a light tonight. These plugs you are talking about, does the timing light plug into them, or does it go to the no.1 plug wire. I came across a manual that said to line up the mark on the crank pulley with 5 degrees and put the distributor back in with it pointing at the no.1 cylinder. Will this get the thing to atleast start? Also if this old girl did jump time, does that mean I have to pull the cover and reset things, are there any marks on the crank and cam pulleys that I have to line up before I do the timing?

If the chain jumped, then you need to get a new chain, gears, tensioner, and guides all available in a kit. Pretty reasonable prices can be found. Here is a writeup on the procedure.

the timing for the 22re is 5* 1985

i have the factory toyota service manual sitting a foot away for all gasoline 1985 toyota truck and 4runner... my truck is a 1985 22r
