gear oil change out
I agree with everyone on the oil change to Amsoil, I'm now on my 2nd change out at 7K miles and an Amsoil filter this time.
I have full synthics in the running gear but not Amsoil - next change out I'll switch over.

I've been using synthetics since my Corolla hit 100K (now at 250K). I used Castrol Syntec for years then switched to Mobil 1 about a year ago. I used Syntec so long that I remember when it started looking "different". One time I swapped in some highl-mileage vehicle dino oil...just to rinse the crancase out. I figured I'd run it a month then do a change. A day or two after the dino was in, my wife came home and said, "I don't know what you did to my car over the weekend, but change it back!"
Been totally synthetic since.
On a side note. when I got this runner about 5 years ago, I swapped the gear oil to Castrol Syntec 75W-90. Since then it seems to have gone through more than it's share of seals. I'm going to swap it out this summer to Mobil 1 as well.

It's true! A Scout never lies...unless he's in a poker game.
On synthetic that little Corolla engine sings all the way up to redline. Rest of the car is falling apart (sun is killing it) but I love that engine.

Before you start going for real long drain intervals you may want to do some oil testing. I have done it and have gone as long as 20,000 miles and it all tested fine, but that is my limit.
It seems that Toyota engines are very hard on oil. Some suggest that this might be because of the poorly designed PCV system Toyota uses, but who knows.
Now I just change twice a year no matter what and can plan ahead for it and mark it on the calender and I don't have to worry about mileage. I don't get over 19,000 miles in 6 months so I know I am really safe and my engine is super protected.
If you are using the AMSOIL filters you should change them at 6 months of use or 12,500 miles which ever comes first. This is why I just change twice a year. It makes my life simple.
There is no issue at all with changing the filter without draining the oil first. The oil is in the pan and the filter is above that. The only oil lost or spilled is that oil in the filter, and yes it is a pain on the 3.4.
For those of you that are thinking about using AMSOIL products the best hook up I can do for you is to invite you to my site,
www.GadgetOnline.com/AMSOIL.htm
and suggest you follow the links to becoming a preferred customer or dealer. It only cost $10 for 6 months and by the time you order the oil and filter you will save way more then that. It will allow you to order the stuff online and pay wholesale prices for it. You just can not get it any cheaper then that.
If you are close to a distribution center you can get your stuff really fast. If I order my stuff online early in the morning, it will be on my doorstep the very next day. I don't even need to leave the house.
Like I said it is the very best hook up I can do for you.
