supercharge 3.0? not standard noob question

this isnt a "do they make a supercharger for my 3.0?"

i was wondering if anyone has attempted a custom supercharger? do the costs come in cheaper than a 3.4 w/blower swap? the reason i ask is because my 95 runner only has 59k on the 3.slow and i cant justify a swap but cant stand the slow part. im coming from a tt 300zx pushing 450hp. i know thats not gonna happen but my girlfrieds neon hauls butt compared to my truck and thats just not acceptable!!! the neon is purple!!! joking aside id consider turbo too because i know a bit about em but i need to have the speed to justify the 14 miles per gallon.

i hear that gearing would help too, does anyone have any technical data on a 95 with the stock 31" tires and what new gears or swaps would be benificial?

the general consensus with the 3.0 around here seems to be that if you want more power, swap the engine. otherwise, live with it.

with 31s and a V6, you should already have the proper gearing.

i know it has the proper "stock gearing". i was wondering if there were any better gearsets for acceleration? im not even sure what the stock number is. somewhere near 4.8? would i benifit from 4.10 or 3.9s

i really dont think the 3.0 would be up to any kind of forced induction, i mean with the head gasket problem thats notorious on this motor, i think you would be asking for trouble unless you put a lot of money into upgrading the internals. in the end you might just be better off with swapping in a 5VZ-FE and supercharge that. maybe even a 7M motor.

Im sure others will have more insight on this topic

i eventully found a dealer for that blower in calif. but dude said after all is said and done, expect close to a $6-7000 bill.

they have to fab the mounts and drive belts. then the FMU, then the blah, blah, blah...

i'm waiting for someone at work to wreck their tundra with an i-force v8 in theirs... :evil smiley:

Your going the wrong direction there dude. The lower the gear ratio the worse acceleration your going to have. With 3.90's you could go 140 mph but it would take you 7 years to get there. If your truck came stock with 31's you more than likely have 4.56's or possibly 4.10's if you came stock with 225's. Going up to 4.88's with 31's could be interesting since that is the recommended ratio for 33's.

It all depends on the transmission. The manual got 4.56 with 31's and auto came with 4.88 with 31's. If you have auto trans then forget it. The manual is not bad with 35's and 5.29.....

thanks for the tip im a forced induction junky, comin from turbo z's and all but i dont know anything about rear gearing ratios. ill look into what i have and see about the 4.88's

i would like to go with the iforce as well but i cant justify swaping a 59k mile motor, and i really cant wait till it goes cause it is toyota and will go for 200 easy

There are better headbolts that can be swapped in. Probably the easiest supercharger to attempt this with would be a centrifugal SC like a Paxton, or Vortech. The roots type like the TRD and co. would require a special intake casting or something hand built from tubing. I was heading down this road when I first joined this site.

Even factory fresh, the 3.0 is a turd. Why polish it?

If you are determined to get "something" out of this motor, do intake and exhaust mods, get manual hubs and an electric fan drive it. It will never be a sports car - wasn't meant to be.

Plan a swap and find a buyer for your 3.0. There is a big demand for these motors (by those that don't want to tackle a swap with a non-stock motor)

How about a $700 turbo system.

There are some others, but I'd just go with jet. Also, do the electric fan, I did notice a SLIGHT difference, but then again, a slight difference with the 3.0 is quite a bit.

There's a guy on the Pirate4X4 bbs who swapped a Grand National Turbo on his 3.0 and it held up fine. It will handle forced induction. Ivan Stewart won lots of races with the 3.slow, it has potential. (I just noticed the link posted :pat: )

The reasons you don't see of a lot of modding are that while it ain't fast, the 3.0 is liveable. Basically it's just not quite bad enough for everyone to want to spend a lot of dough. If the demand were there, the market would follow. As we sit, those of us with 5 speeds are pretty content. Only those with automatics are really unhappy. That doesn't leave a huge customer base with which to justify the R&D.

There are other options for power. Everyone I have read who installed headers said they it made a noticeable difference. You can have the heads ported and pollished with bigger valves put in. You can mod the intake for better flow. These things do make the truck go faster and will retain turn key reliability.

If you did the above with 31's and 5.29s (auto) or 4.56's (5 speed), she'd get up and go just fine.

Frank

A chip isn't going to do anything for you - even if you went intake/headers/exhaust

They may not be able to chip that ECU anyway. Waste of money.

the cant chip it... its a reflash of the existing ecu, it changes the curves to more agressive ones. if nothing else it will get better fuel economy, why so quick to say its junk? have you ever done it? ive done it on many sports cars and its incredible. engine management should be the first building block to any tuned car
