Stiffest shocks for towing availible?
#21
Thank you all for the information. I will being ordering a set of Airlift bags and will see how the truck tows with them and will upgrade shocks and colis if need be. Just for the record, the trailer has disc brakes as well so braking will not be too much of an issue.

If you want to stiffen things up and don't want to deal with an air setup I'd go with 891s and Bilstein shocks. Its a bit on the stiff side but the truck will handle better than most cars and will handle the added weight much better. I once had 1,600+lbs in the back of my truck with this setup and it was still manageable. Not ideal, but your tongue weight should be MUCH less. I would also flush the trans and get a hayden transmission cooler ASAP. You can get them at pretty much any auto parts store and are CHEAP insurance. If you are mostly on road, I couldn't recommend a better setup.

I was going to reply again last week but we went camping. I took my parents' boat out (21' deep V I/O - about 5000lbs) a couple of Saturdays ago, and I was truly impressed with how my OME 906 coils handled the load. Everyone says you need 891's for every little thing, but there are other great options that don't include 3" of lift. If you choose to do the airbag setup, you'll probably be happy. It sounds like you're more conservative than most guys on here. A lot of guys would feel it's absolutely necessary to buy a Duramax if they had to pull a boat around, even though it's total overkill. Same thing with the 891's.
If your shocks have more than about 60k miles on them, you may want to look at getting new rears (so the heavy tongue doesn't roll you back and forth) - probably tokico's or bilstiens, since you're keeping your stock springs. You'll know pretty quick whether you want new rear shocks.
Good luck and let us know how it goes!
Oh, yeah - take us wakeboarding!
