starter going ??

my 98 4runner has 120k. The last couple of days when I turn the key nothing happens (sometimes), then i try again and it starts. Is my starter going out and need replacing?

Could be starter solenoid, loose wire connection to starter, or the starter itself.

Do you hear a click when you go to turn over? Could be bad ground connection at the battery.

Get that looked at! Same thing was happening to me on my '97 before the winter. One fine day it happened and the f'ing thing would not stop cranking no matter what I did. After freaking out I was able to find the tools to pull my battery cable, for some reason pulling the fuses under the hood didn't work.
It was the soleniod (stuck). I did kill my battery but luckily I didn't cook my starter. It could have been alot more expensive....

Christian (<96_Runner>) has the best advice - Roger Brown's site is full of all the diagnosis tips that you could want about starter system related issues.

Battery cables, solenoid, starter, starter contacts... All ar possibilities. The most common (more than you may think!) is the starter contacts. A quick fix, and Roger sells the perfect bag of parts for ~$14.
