p0420 means your cats arent working right.

i imagine you have a 3.4 with a lot of miles on it. cats need replaced on all trucks. probably time for yours.

a p0420 can be just a bad o2 sensor. heck i had a 420 (on april 20th go figure) and got a new toyota 02 sensor and code-b-gone for several
thousand miles now (though it could come back when my cats actually do go bad, and that can be anytime...I haz 150,000 miles +)

but when there is a different noise out the pipe, something
is physically corrupting the channel

in yer case I am betting the cat honeycomb is coming apart and clogging
the works. u need a new cat. cat can asplode when you have other trouble
and do not know. a rock hits the cat, misfire, an unburned fuel explosion,
backfire...all this can destroy a cat. seafoam or other so called treatments
can also cause the cat to overheat and blow apart.

simple age too...
