OK, here is the deal. The skid plate that is commonly advertised on eBay for between 80-120 for the Tacoma will fit the 96-98 4Runners with the mounts that come with that skid plate. Part number 212-35040. You do not have to remove the stock black gravel guard skid plate. It does not extend that far. That is what is on the front of my truck in the avatar picture. For the "fat lip" 99-02 and the 4th Gen you can still use that skid plate but you might have to fabricate your own brackets or adapt them to work for your application. Now, the Tacoma skid plate is slightly different from the one Toyota installed on the 02 Sport Edition and the brackets are obviously lower and stick out farther towards the front to accomodate the "fat lip" bumper. In my experience, these are much harder to come by but if you want a no-fab bolt-on Toyota solution for your 99-02 then that is the one to get. As far as the bling factor, these are not anywhere near as sturdy as what you can get from Trail Carnage, for example. Just depends on what you want to do and how you drive your truck. I don't spend a lot of time rock crawling mine, like a lot of other guys on the forums do who could take advantage of that kind of protection. But I can tell you that I was in a front end accident and that skid plate on my truck saved me from getting more damage to me and the other vehicle than if I did not have it on.

4Peanut, I see you live in Maryland. If you want to see what it looks like on my 4Runner, I would be glad to try and meet you somewhere. The part number is 212-35040. Whether it looks silly or not is up to you.

96-98 can be mounted with 2 bolts instead of 4 with no modifications, or brackets can be readjusted to make skid plate do not stick out too much. It's a matter of personal preferences though...

no.
tho i will give this anecdote: one time i was going down the 405 at about 70mph and out of nowhere a paint bucket shows up in my lane and i have no time to avoid it. i hit it straight on and the skid plate took most of the impact. one slight bent up slightly, that was it.
but off road, that thing will likely get all messed up and out shape if hit.

waag makes a skid plate adapter kit for their 4runner brush guard. but with that setup, the skid plate hangs really low and just doesn't look right.
i modified my waag so that the brushguard could fit in the stock location. pretty much what i did was shave an inch or so off the bottom of the brush guard, just allowing enough room for the skidplate to fit.

worked out for me!
ordered a tacoma skid plate for my 1998 4Runner SR5 on tuesday (Part number 212-35040) and it worked out just fine. i read on here that the brackets had to be reversed or put on backwards and that all the mounting hardware wasn't used; but it mounted up just fine with all the hardware used, just like the directions said. so, i guess if you have a '98 4Runner you'll know that you can order an aluminum skid plate for a Tacoma Part number 212-35040 and it will mount up perfectly to give you that '01/'02 Sport look.
just my $.02
will post pics when i get a chance.
thanks,
patrick
