Shouldn't be too difficult, although mine was very easy as I have my engine & tranny removed. You can actually reach the clip on the back of the speedo without tearing it apart. There's a locking clip that you must press to get it to unlock. From the engine bay, you can just pull the cable out, it's the one with a rubber seal as part of the cable, kind of hiding behind some heater hoses. It's secured to the body with some clips as it goes down to the tranny. The attachment to the tranny is nothing wierd, just unscrew. About $80 at my local Toyota dealer. I took mine out to lube it for squealing, it's not broke. Gonna put it back in tomorrow.

The job is done and all is quiet now! I had to remove the speedo cluster in order to ensure proper cable routing and to get the dang clip on correctly. Not too difficult, getting all the plastic off around the panel is a pain, but well worth it.

Is yours broken or just noisy? Mine was noisy. I removed the cable from the its housing and coated it with lithium grease. I forced abit more lithium down the cable housing and kind of worked it in with the cable. Then for good measure, I did it again. I don't want to repeat this one!!

Question Speedometer cable vs. speed sensor

I have a 1990 4Runner V6 4x4 automatic. My speedometer stopped working a few months ago, and more recently the transmission seems to be shifting at odd times. I have done a TON of research, and I THINK I have narrowed the problem down to the speed sensor. However, my research also hints that there is a separate speedometer cable. Are they the same part or 2 separate parts? Would either or both cause my 4Runner to shift strangely? Recently on the highway it went into neutral, or so it seemed. The engine revved but the gears wouldn’t catch. I pulled over, turned off the ignition, re-started the car and it ran again. It still shifted strangely, but it stayed in gear(s). All of the above happens occasionally. Am I correct in assuming it’s the speed sensor and/or speedometer cable? If so, can someone please help me find the speed sensor/speedometer cable? Any diagram(s) would be GREATLY appreciated!

Symptoms: speedometer not working at all; O/D light flashes on and off sporadically; shifts gears at odd (wrong) times; sometimes shifts itself into neutral while driving, and won’t go back into gear until I turn the car off, then back on again. Please help!
