I had them put in larger speakers in the rear .. it wasn't a big deal. Not much drilling involved at all. I think they're 5.25 or 5.5 ... it was a long time ago, I dont remember exactly.

I've sat in the back seat of my truck and the fronts overpower the rears probably b/c of the size of the speakers but probably b/c of the location as well. Unless you plan on going w/ separates and putting tweats up higher, you probably won't get that much of a difference w/ better speakers in the rear doors. My two cents...

I replaced my factory speakers with 4" phoenix golds and they sound much better than stock, the only thing is the factory speaker is a really wierd size (between 5.25 and 4'') so i made a little plate using some mdf board and sealed it with some silicone, they sound great.

different year runners had different sizes in front... all the rears (3rd gens) I believe or around 4". You can easily put some 5.25 with a little cutting/innovation. I have a 97' and my fronts were 5.25" so I had to do some cutting to get the 6.5" kappas in there. I have some 5.25" blaupunkt replacements and they are great with my kappas, they were cheap and effective.
I beleive there is a write up for this in the tech section.

I put 5.25" in the rear for my '97 4Runner. I had to get a little creative with mounting them in the stock speaker opening, but they will fit. I had to cut one of the screws shorter in order work around the metal frame, but the other three went in without issue. On a scale of 1-5 for a novice, I'd say it was a 2 (1 being easiest).
Was it worth it? Yeah, I like the fuller sound. It's not dramatic (certainly not "wow"), but it does sound better.

Why even bother with 4"? I had to replace the 4" fronts in my dads '91 and yes they sounded better then stock, but when I got my '98, the stock 6.75" front sound way better then the 4" references I put in that. I put 5.25" references in my friends cherokee and they sound great. I think 4" is just a crappy size. they are too small to make a quality sound. Definately put 5.25" in the back.
