If I remember correctly in the manual it says that I have to drive in 4wd for at least 10 miles a month to keep everything oiled. And all I drive on is pavement. Is this bad? Oh and I have a limited edition 1995 sr5 4Runner.

Seriously, I just put mine in 4WD on rainy days because the pavement will slip then and won't be quite so hard on the system. It also lubes it and I get to run through puddles. Wheeeee!

I try to drive mine in 4wd for a few miles every month as well. Except when I do it on pavement, most of the time I just go straight and just slight movement of the wheel left and right back and forth. You don't want to go for a full hard turn or u-turn. That'll be bad.......

Or you could do like me, if you live close enough. I get out into the woods at least 3-5 times per week, hehehe

I wouldn't sweat it too much man. But whenever you happen to think about it, and you are on a straight stretch of road, just throw it in for a bit and that should be good enough...

yeah sorry, I couldn't pass up the opportunity..

if it makes you feel any better, some trails get old after a while. I know this area of the prescott national forest better than the city of prescott itself..
oh it also wastes the small ammount of money that I do make, but hey, what else have I got to spend it on

I thought the 4WD high in the 4runner was much closer in the way it works to a straight definition "AWD" rather than "4x4", i.e. it was designed to be driven on dry with no ill effect.

No, I don't think so. 4HI on a 4Runner is not the same as "AWD".

All 4runners and trucks prior to "multi-mode" have part time 4wd which is not designed to be used on pavement. The driveline will bind up, severe wear and breakage is possible. Straight line driving is OK, just don't try to turn sharply. If you have trouble shifting back out of 4wd try giving it more or less gas. If you get it bound up so bad that you can hardly move forward, keep the wheel how it is and back up slowly until you can shift out of 4wd.
