Just a little info. I have a 98 on which I added 16" rims and tires. With the larger rims and tires, I am currently not able to pass smog in CA. Not sure how strict your smog regs are. The larger tires put a bigger load on the engine which causes more emissions. Keep that in mind, and you might want to keep your stock rims and tires in case you have a situation like mine. I am going to have to put the stock rims and tires from my wifes 97 on and see if it will pass smog.

I'll be interested to see if it does because I think the guy at the station was feeding you a bit of a story to be honest. If you put the new tires on and even if it just barely passes, he was full of it. A N/A 4runner in good condition should pass NOx emissions with flying colors.

Here is a link on another board where someone had to use smaller tires to pass the smog test. I am just looking for a way to pass right now, my tags are expired!!!!

What size tires are you running now?

As long as you know it's the tire diamater that would affect the emissions not the rim size. There is some truth to the fact the running a smaller tire would make emissions go down but like I said, I'll be curious to see exactly how much. I understand it's is very unpleasant to run around with expired tags (esp in California!)

Didn't all 4wd '97s come with 16" wheels anyway?

You can always ask DMV for and extention on your smog. Just pay your reg and tell them you need a little more time on the smog as it is not passing and you are tryingt o get it fixed.
