Try a search.

But I will tell you that Bilstein and Edelbrock will probably get the most votes on here. However, I have not had any problems whatsoever with my Rancho's. But, I do think I will go with Bilstein's for my next set.

I put Gabriels ($100 for 4) on my 95...just couldn't justify spending $250 for Bilsteins with a tuition payment coming up. I couldn't believe the difference when compared with the itty bitty shocks the original owner had put on.

i put on the ranchos, because I could not find the Edelbrock for my application. The Ranchos have worked well for me.

My preference: Bilstein's

It really depends on what kind of ride you're looking to acheive. The Bilsteins, IMO, are great if you like a more sporty feel instead of "riding on a cloud". Don't get me wrong, though. The Bilsteins are an absolute improvement over the stock shocks.

I think yoou ccan get Bilsteins from "Performance" for about $70.00 each. I put them on my 95 $Runner at 10K miles and wouldn't have anything else. I bought mine from NWOR.

I keep seeing these outragous prices with regard to Performance Products. I will tell you right now they are OVERPRICED on EVERYTHING!!! I bought my Bils for $55 a piece from Central 4WD that is in the vendors section here. Don't go the cheap route and try to save a few bucks you'll only end up spending more money later when you have to replace them again. There's few members that have made that mistake. You'll be fine with the Bils or Edelbrocks... Only two I have heard no negative comments about. A few like Ranchos but alot more do not. As far as Gabriel better than stock but junk compared to the higher priced shocks. I have done all 3 and very happy with my Bils so far!

Performance Products has sales a few times a year. Usually 10 or 15% off. Those are the only times you should shop from them. I'm on their mailing list and when I was pricing the Bils and their 1" lift springs it came up to quite a savings. I tried the savings link in that original e-mail the other day and I still got the discount on the springs but not the Bils. Also, anyone tried a shock you can get at a local auto parts store like the Monroe Sensatrac? Seems like a cheaper alternative to those awesome Edelbrock shocks that Corey and a few of the guys are sporting.

No to gabriel

Get a good shock.. I just replaced mine on my 95 4runner and put those darn Gabriels on....

I am not a big fan. I thought I would save some money! BS, I am taking those jokers off shortly after I put new springs in the rear.

You think I would have learned after sticking them on my 86 4x4,and 87 4runner.

They just dont seem responsive...

A lifetime warrenty on a piece of Junk.

Just my opinion....

Any body want to trade me their Bils for my Gabriels????

I thought so............

Here is what I have found out since owning my rig.
When I got it November of '98 the shocks on it were leaking.
They were black Monroe's, but not sure of the model.

Going down the highway when it was windy out was downright scary.
I'd get blown all over.

I picked up some Mountain Ryders from Les Schwab tires and they are the same as a Gabriel Gas Adjust.
They helped a bit, but not much.

I then got the Downey HD coils put on, and the shocks still handled not the greatest on the freeway in the wind.

I finally bought the Edelbrocks after reading up on them and never have I thought about switching them.
This was back in October of '99 when I put them on, and they are still like new.

The blown around effect on the freeway was gone, and much more manageable if it was real windy.
Off road the shocks are great to, and never once have I bottomed them out or over extended them, so they work great with the Downeys.

I would like to ride in a Bilstein equipped rig to also compare.
I think a good choice for the 2nd gens is either shock.

2nd gens are heavy beasts, and some of the other shocks out there are to mushy IMHO.
I'm glad I spent the extra dough on these, as they have not let me down yet.

On the Ranchos, I went through two sets of the 5000s on my '90 Extracab I use to have.
That is why I wanted to try something different this time.

I tried the cheaper route, and let me tell you I thought I was going to need a chiropractor once a week. I switched to the Edelbrocks, and my god it was like a different truck all together. Like Corey said above I haven't had any experience with the Billies, but I've heard good things. I noticed a big change as far as wind goes as well. I don't think you'll be unhappy with them. And trust me spend the extra money. I picked mine up at Performance on their Xmas sale so I lucked out.

Bils

You won't be sorry, go with the Bils. Get them from Central like Joey. $55 ea is a good price. While you are at it, replace your steering stabilizer with an OME from them too..

Just checked their site and they have the shocks for $67.95 for the second gen and $79 for the third gen. Same price as Performance Products. How do you get the Bilsteins so cheap?

Edelbrock monotube IAS shocks are working great on my rig. I agree with Cebby- get the OME steering stabilizer put on as well. With both of those mods your truck will ride 10x better than new!
