Replace gaskets when changing diff / txfer case oil!

Well, I got underneath my truck to help the guy lube my driveline and make sure he got all the zerks. I saw that my txfer case was leaking, out the drain plug. It was tight but when I switched over to AMSOIL Severe Gear 75w-90 I didn't buy new metal gaskets. I guess I learned my lesson. GET NEW GASKETS! They are cheap, and definetly not worth the $13 / qt it is to have it leak and change it again. I thought it would be ok to not buy the gaskets. Guess what I will be doing tomorrow? Changing the txfer case oil along with a regular oil change, tranny fluid drain and fill and rear diff drain and fill.

Just thought I might help out fellow YTers.

Pics to come tomorrow.

Whatever happened to this? Do you mean "crush washers" rather than "gaskets"?

Those crush washers are not reuseable. I wondered if they would actually leak if not replaced. Now I know, they do. I keep a few on hand after changing the rear diff oil. It's more of a hassle to go them than it is a cost issue.

You can flip the crush washers around a couple of times. I've changed out my diff and t-case fluid a couple of times and haven't replaced my washers. I just flipped them and no leaks, tranny too.

Some are crush washers, some are metal gaskets. The metal gaskets are solid all the way around. The crush washers are separated into 2 pieces if you view it from the top of the ring looking down onto the side. I think that it is cheap insurance to just replace them. All 6 cost me around $6. My motto is: Do it once, do it right and never have to worry about it.
