Since no one wants to buy my truck (85 4runner posted in classified section) I guess I'll have to replace to the timing chain and keep it
I have the head removed and am about to change the timing chain and was wondering if I can still crank the motor to remove the crank bolt? is this a bad idea. If this can not be done, how hard will it be to remove with manual tools?

Get you a cheap electric impact.It will whiz it right off.Cranking the engine and trying to wedge a socket on the crank pully bolt is not a good idea.

Get a 1/2 breaker bar and socket and put it on the crank bolt. Get a long strong piece of steel (Ive found the end of a crescent wrench or a big screwdriver to work best) and put that against the side of the block and the crank weight. Youll need two people and have the person with the breaker bar turn the nut off. Its on there with about 150ft/lbs but will come off. Hit it with an impact a couple times and spray some aerokroil or liquid wrench and it should free it up some before hand...Its farely easy let me know if i need me to elaborate

and back to your question, i used a 1/2 air impact gun, zipped it right off, impacts are your friend, one other way would be to remove the oil pan, (which you should do anyway to remove broken chain chunks and such) and get a piece of wood, (a hammer handle works good) and wedge it between one of the crankshaft counterweights and the block, and pry away on the bolt
