regular denso plug question

regular denso plug question

what are they supposed to be gapped at?? i have read .033 and .043. which is it? when i got mine they were gapped in the 30's so i gapped them to .040. is this ok? these are just the regular denso's straight from toyota dealership

it says on the underside of your hood i think or in the engine bay.... i think i gapped mine at .43.

It's supposed to be .043... for my Taco anyway. But I just checked the sparkplugs.com website and it says .044 for your '02 Taco. Funny, it says the same for my '99. It doesn't make too much of a difference anyway, right?

i didint gap my plugs when i got them from the dealer and its runs perfect

well they're both the 5vz egine right? so i dont think the model and year makes a difference

I install them straight out of the box (just check for obvious damage).
Even if they are a little tight on the gap (ie in the 30's), they'll open up naturally with use.

REALLY??? Jamie, of all people!

Do you really do that? I've had plugs that were way squished and ones that were probably .060!

Yep........but keep in mind I've installed ALOT of plugs so I might be a tad better than the average bear at just looking at the plug and knowing about what the gap is (ie I could usually look at it visually and give you a range). I don't think I've seen any come from Denso worse than 0.050, but I've seen some squished ones for sure. The NGK's and Denso's seem to hold pretty good tolerances from the factory if they aren't too badly manhandled during shipping. I always err on the side of the gap being slightly smaller than the spec due to the fact that it will open up as the plug wears. Never had any issues using the old calibrated eyes though.

well mine are gapped around .040 give or take.. hope it works.. i really dont feel like pulling them back out lol. but if i have i have to.. is .040 good enough?

It will be perfectly fine.
Like I said, gapping them slightly (notice "slightly" as in maybe +/- 0.005) smaller is preferable for longer plug life.

I went through this a bit on my own and realized that the electrode is curved to match - so I normal gapper wont give you an accurate reading. You need to use the wire kind and will find that the gap is actually more than you think. Probably closer to .04
