I thought about new carpet but mine is still perfectly fine. I just need to remove the color and then just use alot of the dye for much less than $240 though. Still on a student's budget...and also I'll need that money for the headliner in gray anyway.

i think rit is junk, but i cant click that link at work... not sure on products but RIT I used on a tan Poly-based armrest pad for Honda turned out grayish purple, and would not stick... I am sure there is a correct process for it though, after all, they are dyed a color to start I guess

Every time I have tried to dye anything black it has come out Purple.....

I would be sure to research this part pretty dang well........

Looks really sharp, I've been thinking about doing this with my interior [going black] did you use only the duplicolour steps or did you prime differently or more times than can says. And are you doing anything differently for

Toyota dropped the ball on not offering black interior that looks good and i am in the same bandwagon i want to two tone my interior gune metal and black

I pretty much hit the plastic parts with automotive primer first. This next phase I'll be using automotive plastic primer which might be better than the original. Anyway, once I primered everything, I put on several coats of the duplicolor fabric / vinyl dye / paint. The vinyl parts I just cleaned with prepsol and alcohol really well. made sure everything was dry and nice before painting and I did sand a little between coats.

Did you use any kind of cleaner before you primed to get rid of residue from dash cleaners/spills etc. first? which one?

I would actually take your carpet out and take it to a home carpet place or call them first to see if they could dye it. My mom had hers go from tan to maroon and looked like it was new maroon carpet even though it was ugly. And it held up to 8 people living in a house.

I just wiped it down with alcohol and then used prepsol. Its all supposed to just prepare it and you can use simple green too if you like. The last thing I'd use is either prepsol or alcohol just to get any dust particles off from sanding and to keep it nice and dry for the paint to adhere to it.

Never heard of simple green or prepsol before, where can you get them?

The biege bottom on the drivers side shows a nice contrast to the black [I know you will paint this black at some point] what I want to say is that when you do the doors you might try leaving the fabric parts and roof liner biege the contrast would look really sharp it would make both colours pop.

I think you can get prepsol from an automotive store. Simple green can be found at walmart in the automotive section. It comes in a concentrated bottle so you'll need to dilute it like 1 part simple green and 10 parts water. Depending on the cleaning power you want.

Okay so I know its been a few weeks but I finally got some free time to start on a few parts. Here we are at the new painting location...my friends house.


Heres a couple of pictures of the parts getting ready to be painted. The dash will finally be complete after this.


These are all from the driver side of the car.


These were sanded so that they can be painted to the gunmetal color instead of the tacky silver I had back in highschool.


Heres a glimpse of something we finished today.


We ran out of interior paint today so we could only finish a few pieces. So I removed as many pieces so they could be primered and then my friend and I will start up again on Wednesday and then I can try to do some more Thursday after I get my other interior parts in.
