Cool Recipe for a shiny rig

Started in on the :pig: at 7:15 am to wash it, and was ready to clay it by 9:15 am.
Gadget, I tried the "sheeting" method at the end with the hose, and I practically had hardly any water to wipe off with my towel.
It only took one pass with it.
This really works instead of the final rinse with a nozzle.
I'm going to do this every time from now on.
Great tip you had, as I use to do it ages ago, but have not since living here.

The ingredients:
Griot's clay bar, Speed Shine, Best Of Show wax, and Porter Cable mix master.

I did leave out the Machine Polish 3, I only used clay, then the BOS wax.

Power claying time took 45 minutes.
Power waxing took about 1.25 hours or so, followed up by a final buffing over entire rig.

Would have taken less time, but after I clayed it, some kids stopped by to watch me power wax it, and that was a distraction.
Also a few grown-ups stopped by also and had to check out the Porter Cable in action.

Mirror shot

Mirror mirror on the wall, who's got the shiniest Bushwackers of all?
Notice the scenery reflected in them.

This was a first, I Porter Cabled the sliderz and the ARB.
It worked great, as the red pad contours to the round tubing just fine.

Back shot

A few front shots

Hood shot, notice the sky & trees

After rig was cooked to perfection, Meguiar's Endurance was added as a garnishment.

When power claying I set the PC to speed 3.
You can see here that there is a lot of vibration going on.
My arms and hands would get all tingling feeling.
That is from the clay being unbalanced in the clay bar holder.
Not once did the clay flip out like a Frisbee.
The secret is to not spray any Speed Shine into the holder.
Just pack the clay in tight, then spray the clay & holder, and mist the panels you are working on.

Power waxing is a lot easier than doing the clay.
Set the speed to 4.
Absolutely no vibration from the unit, and it's light enough to do it with just one hand.
You don't have to press with the PC, just let the pad do the work.
Sure beats doing it by hand.
Doing it by hand I'd say it would take over 4 hours alone just to wax it.

I also used less BOS this time, and it worked out better.
I have a habit of using to much, and it's hard to wipe off.
This time it was a lot easier to wipe off.

Rig is blinding to look at in the sun when you walk up to it.
Pictures can't do it justice.
It will be even shiner after the wax sets after it gets wet from rain or the next wash.

Feels good to have this out of the way too, as I was not planning on doing it until May, but today the weather service predicted a great day, and they were right, for a change

Nice. I usually spray my ˟˟˟˟ down with a hose or something. It definitely doesn't look that nice hehe. Makes me jealous, but then I remember you were up at 7:15 and I was still sleeping off saturday night. Hmm maybe I don't feel so good after all. What kind of rims are those? American Racing? AR-32s? I like the deep dish look.

Thanks.
The rims came on the rig when I bought it back in Nov. of '98.

They are Centerline HT/Cast type 30 wheels.
I think they are out of production now, and very hard to find.

If I get new wheels some day, I'm hanging onto these.

They are 15x8.5, and very deep.

I just tried to find more info online with Google, and it brings up my website.

Must not be to much info online about them.

where'd you pick up your pc? how much? just cleaned my rig off the other day from last weeks trip and noticed TONS of tree damage, i'm a big fan of body damage but only if it's big and rough, no need for these little girlie scratches!

NICE

Corey,

Really looks nice!

I've got the BOS wax but haven't had a chance to appy it yet.

I'm saving up for the Groits kit that comes with all the goodies-The PC, clay, applicator, etc. I think it's about $275 for the kit.

Woodbert, if you have family stateside see if they can pick you one up at Lowes. I bought the same Porter Cable Random Orbital Sander that Griots sells (Model #7336SP) for $105. Griots has it advertised at $199.95. I bought the backing plate (part #10625C / $24.50), pads and other stuff from Griots. Should save you a little money.

I did our 4Runner today also. Great day.
I installed the 02 taillights also.
I used Meguiars clay bar and it worked great. If you have never used a clay bar before you should try it. The 4Runner was smooth as glass. Then I used mothers wax by hand.
Your's looks great Corey, we should meet up sometime.

Thanks for the tip Lance. I definately had sticker shock when I saw the cost of the kit from Groits.

I'll see if I can get someone to get the PC for me from Lowes.

Thanks again!

ryn, Lowe's is a good place to get it as Bighead mentioned, and way cheaper than Griot's or Meguiar's sells it for.

Also on my detail site I have a link to Tools For Less.
That is where I bought mine a few years back.

Thanks Woodbert.
I am going to submit a photo and testimony again to Griot's.
Mr. Griot's say to was every 90 days as the wax breaks down.
My last wax job was May 11th of last year, and it was still beading water into small droplets.

Bighead, I still have the Meguiar's backing plate on mine, but might get the Griot's one down the road.

Paul, I agree.
After claying just one section I ran my fingers over it and it was smooth as glass.
It's a must do every time before you wax.
Yah, we gotta get together some time.

She gets dirty too Dan.
That was two weeks ago.
Today was the first time it was washed since then, and the frame inside the rear wheelwell had mud about an inch thick piled on top still.
And on the flares underneath tons of dirt came out from putting the hose up there.
It got pretty filthy up where we went, but the pics on that run don't really show it.
That's one thing I like about white, it hides dirt well.
My dad always had a white car as far back as I can remember, and it was for the same reason.
This is my 3rd white Toyota.

I don't know if anyone has thought of this but what about a refurbished porter cable. I don't know how much you would save but it might be worth a try.
I think I saw a Porter Cable place off 167 by Auburn? Have you ever seen the place Corey?

I called them a few years back before I bought mine hoping to save some $$$.

They did not have any in at the time (7336 unit) so I ordered mine new.

I can't remember what they were getting for a refurbed one.

OK Corey,

You sold me on Griot's and Porter Cable.

I was just on the PC web site. Did you register for the Performance Crew? I clicked on Porter Cable Stories and half expected to see a testamonial there from you.

He he, did not know they had a submission area.
I have been very pleased with mine, may have to look into that.

Even met a new neighbor today of the O+ varitety who was asking me questions about waxing, and could not believe my rig was this old.

Might have to find out a little more about her too

Good luck with the neighbor....

Yeah, if you click on Performance Crew and register, you get access to some other stuff, one of which is reading and being able to submit a story.

You also get 10% off PC logo merchandise, like hats!

I will check that out for sure.

Arghhhh, the pollen has begun.
Just went out a bit ago to put the wheel lock on, and my ARB is yellow

Also the hood, and other parts you can see the yellow.
This is not the white granular sugar that's been falling on it.

Must have been the warm weather today.
I mean it's really yellow.
Maybe I'll try snagging a pic of it.
Funny how it was so white earlier.
Most of that stuff blows off once you start moving.

I really hate that big @ss tree I park under.
