Rear Oil Seal
Hey All,
I've been told my 2gen ('95) has a rear seal that's leaking (yes, I can tell something's leaking) If this is the case, while the shop has it up in the air, what else maintenance wise should be considered?

Is your truck manual or automatic?
If you're manual maybe it'd be better to just continually add the oil until it's time for a clutch job? It's pretty labor intensive to get to the rear main seal.

That's probably something you'd want to determine then.
You might also want to post what they're estimating so you can get a good idea of whether or not you're being raped on the cost.

Hey All,
The shop is first rate so I have confidence in their findings/cost...the real question is no matter what it is we'll probably fix it but is there anything else that SHOULD be done...
To some degree it's going to be determined by what EXACTLY is leaking? I assume they'll need to drop the trans. off the rear of the motor?

I haven't needed one on my 4Runner, but I did have the problem with my 92 Jeep cherokee with 240,000 miles. Both my local mechanic and dealership said it would be near $800 because they had to drop the transmission. Luckily my father-in-law knew someone in Tn. that had a machine shop and he did it for $250. It never dropped a drop of oil after that. Good luck.

is doing it yourself out of the question? if you have a manual and a good set of tools it shouldnt be too hard. plus if you have to buy tools, you will spend less than 800 bucks and have tools and knowledge to show for it in the end

Hey All,
If it's an auto I assume it's a bigger deal...my tools are pretty basic but I can handle a pair of vice grips and a pipe wrench with the best of 'em....I searched but didn't really find any "how to's", anyone point me to something? How long does it take? I think the shop said more than a day...the one good thing - I fo have heated garage (insert happy face here)
punkbek - I like the tools and knowledge angle, now I need the time.

i have the haynes manual for the 79-95 trucks/4runners. its not the best manual but its never steered me wrong so far. you can pick them up at most parts stores for about 15 bucks if you havent bought one already. sometimes libraries have them for checkout too. if you want i could type up the instructions as theyre written in the manual but you would miss out on the pictures, your call. the main part is taking out the transmission, but if youre interested in saving a boatload of money, i say go for it. to put boatload in perspective, the part costs 15 bucks

Hey All,
OOppss! Sorry about the auto/manual confusion...anyhoo, do I need a lift to do this or are Runners high enough to work in the dirt? While I was running in my new heater lines I was pleasantly surprised at how much ground clearance there really is under there.
I've not done any engine work for a long time but with a good shop manual, I suppose I could give it a go...the Runner is our designated DD but I have a Miata in reserve so the Runner could sit for a period of time.
Like I said, I have BASIC tools (mostly woodworking), no air tools, no floor jack(s)...but it sounds as if even if I had to buy tools I might be ahead of the game if the part(s) are only $15.
I'll go get the Hayne's Manual...

Here's a bit of an update:
Struck out on the Hayne's Manual...all we have around here is for '96 on...
My wife went and talked to her guys at the shop, they said:
1) they'd photocopy their stuff for me
2) for them to do it - $500-600
3) they're in full support of my attemp, they don't envy me the job and said go for it...that it wasn't so much the tear down, it's the getting it back together's when the frustration sets in...
4) the worst I could do is have to get it taken to their shop to finsih up the work
I looked around a bit, there's oil collecting on the plug on the bottom of the front dif, there's a fair amount on the underside of the bell housing (has "3V" on it), none up high on either side, some on the right side down low, some on the under side of the oil pan
Hopefully I'll get some pics off my daughter's dig.
My son's coming into town in a couple of weeks...maybe it's time for one of those "teachable momments in auto mechanics...)
So I'm guessing the trans is a bear to get both in and out? I think my wife said that her guys had said that getting it all lined back up was the issue..and they have the luxury of a lift.
Can this be done "in the dirt" - is there enough room to get a floor jack under there as well as yourself and unbolt the thing?

I don't know what's entailed with an auto tranny BUT I would suggest getting the truck lifted and on jacks with enough clearance so that you can move the bell housing out of the way (on a jack or something). You might need the room for leverage and it'd hurt to bang your head on something.
Also, make sure you do this on level ground. When we did mine we were working on a driveway with a slight incline. When it came to restabbing the transmission we had a hell of a time getting level.
EDIT:
pulling the tranny out was a pain on the manual. I have no idea what it's like on an auto. I'd think it would help if you had a transmission jack or something.
