rear axle bearing question

I have been having a time with my 4runner rear axle. I think i have it all now but I have a question about the way the rear axle bearing goes in. The one I was sent has a shoulder made on it, I called trdparts4u.com and they said the shoulder went towards the outside of the vehicle however when we pressed it in that way the bearing doesn't sit all the way down in the cage, it is out just a little bit and it doesn't turn as freely as I think it should. Can any one confirm that this is correct? The original didn't have the extra shoulder on it, it was smooth on both sides. I replaced the Axle shaft, the bearing, the seal and the cage that it presses in to. Thanks in advance.

i don't recall the wheel bearings to having a shoulder. from what i recall, the bearings were symmetrical and could be installed either way.

part number is 90363-40020 for 1996-2000 models.. late 2000 to 2002 models have the 90363-40068 wheel bearings

I recall the same (above).

You never answered in the other thread: do you have ABS? The reason I ask is that you need to make sure the inner most retainer ring is EXACTLY in the right spot, otherwise you will get axle oil running past the seal. There is only 2mm of leeway for that ring. I found out the hard way.

Ok sorry about the delay. Yes I do have antilock brakes and I do have 16" wheels, I ordered the axle accordingly. I took the assembly's to a dealer today that I was close to going to my part time job I explained my trouble they pressed the assembly apart that I felt was wrong and turned the bearing over so the shoulder was towards the inside of the assembly and put it all back together. It turns freely now. I hope tomorrow to get my ride back together. It has been down for two weeks now trying to get this straightened out. I hope this will help someone in the future. To summarize: if you replace the axle, and the inner seal journal is larger than the original, you also have to replace the bearing, cage, and outer seal to new part numbers. the bearing will have a shoulder on it and it goes to the inside of the vehicle.
