question about water holes

What is the best way to handle a water hole that you do not know its depth but can tell that it has been used by the tire tracks going through it, especially if you are alone. Thanks

Thats a tough one.

I always get out and poke at it with a stick or tool to test it before i drive through it.

Back into it. If water comes pouring over the tailgate, it's too deep You may still get stuck, but at least you are not stuck AND hydrolocked.

One of the best things you can invest in is a good pair of hunting boots that are knee high. These type of boots are designed to be worn in muddy conditions, are completely waterproof and usually gortex lined to keep you warm. If you want the best way, next to checking with a stick, it's to start walking into the water slowly, feeling your way through. You'll find out real quick if its deep or shallow, solid bottom or bottomless goo. This approach will also allow you to use the stick at a farther reach.

If its muddy on the bottom you can pull up some of the mud and inspect. Usually if its dark brown, it'll have a bottom. If it's red it's clay and that stuff is downright nasty! Greasy as chicken poop. (Yes I said chicken poop! You've never been stuck unless you've had the distinct pleasure of being stuck in a pen filled with chicken crap! Ask me, and I'll tell ya 'bout it!) If it's gray or black, watch out! That is nasty stinkin slimy suction swamp mud that will not let your tires go!

Just a week ago, I got a pair of Field and Stream, Gortex 600 lined, hunting boots from Dick's Sporting Goods, for $49.99! They were marked down from 79.99. Best investment I've made yet. Next in line is a pair of fish waders up to the hip. Yeah, sometimes the mud gets surprisingly that deep!

Here's a pic of me wearing 'em:

Keep all 4 wheels down...down and dirty in the MUD!
